Set along the Adriatic Sea, Durrës is Albania’s main port city and one of the oldest cities in the Balkans, with a history stretching back over 2,500 years. It’s where ancient history blends effortlessly with a laid-back coastal lifestyle — from landmarks like the Durrës Amphitheatre to long, sun-soaked beaches and vibrant promenades. 🌴🍹
If you’re thinking of visiting, one thing that’s really helpful to understand is how the coastline is loosely divided. You’ll often hear people talk about Zones 1 through 4 — not official districts, but a simple way locals describe the different areas along the coast.
And wherever you are along the coast, one thing you can expect — beautiful beach bars, stunning restaurants, and stylish spots all dotted along the shoreline, perfect for long lunches and sunset dinners by the sea.
Here’s a quick guide:
📍 Zone 1 – The Heart of Durrës
Closest to the port, this was the first area to be developed, so it feels a little more clustered and full of character. Because of its central location, it tends to stay busy and lively for most of the year — with a real sense of everyday local life. There are also exciting plans underway to develop a brand-new marina here, which is set to transform the area into an even more beautiful waterfront space (I’ll do a separate post on that).
📍 Zone 2 – The Beachfront Strip
Stretching south from the centre, this is the classic seaside setting — a lively stretch of beach, hotels, and places to relax by the water.
📍 Zone 3 – Golem Area
This is where things really start to feel special. Heading toward Golem, the whole atmosphere shifts into something much more high-end and resort-like. You’ll find newly built cobbled boulevards, beautifully spaced-out hotels, and a real sense of openness. Everything feels brand new and thoughtfully designed — with lush greenery, palm-lined walkways, and then opening out onto around 60 metres of stunning beachfront. It genuinely feels like a luxury coastal escape.
📍 Zone 4 – Coastal Escape
For something even more tucked away, areas further along the coast — including around Lalëz Bay — offer a peaceful, spacious setting with a more exclusive feel.
Each zone has its own charm and distinctive character, yet they all share the same stunning beachfront, stretching for miles and miles.
Durrës is vibrant, historic, and evolving fast into something really special. Definitely one to add to your list if you’re exploring Albania 🇦🇱
