Milan shed its all-work-and-no-play reputation a long time ago, but these days, it’s especially in vogue. It’s feeling itself, you might say, and we’re here for it. Like other Italian cities, Milan is steeped in tradition; unlike other Italian cities, it keeps looking forward. The city is walkable (and has cute trams), historic and cutting edge (the art, the food, the hotels), and totally chic.

Our Fathom Favorites are designed as easy to use, tightly edited lists. Head to the link in bio for old classics, local standbys, and surprises like a private home with a backyard of flamingos, an eight-table cutie serving nonna-style magic, and Wes Anderson-designed gelateria. Andiamo a Milano!

There are many things waiting to kill you at Yellowstone. Like dramatic geothermal geyser basins, poisonous gasses, and crystalline blue waters that are actually scalding hot. And yet — it’s one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever seen. Go for the drama. Stay for the quiet moments. Read all about it on FathomWaytoGo.substack.com

For anyone else wishing we could turn back the clock to a time when global conflict was worked out on the slopes and the ice, here’s a little trip to the Dolomites. (Cameos from .dolomites )

We had no idea the post we published on Substack on Thursday that included, among other things, info about how to stay safe if a political crisis breaks out while you’re traveling, would prove to be so timely. An unfortunate coincidence. And sadly all too commonplace lately. Read more at FathomWaytoGo.substack.com

It’s mid November, so gift guides are on the menu. But we don’t care if you don’t want to buy anything. (Who does? It’s so boring). We just want you to know that this holiday season, we’re looking for things that inspire and serve JOY.

We found it in:

🌟 Cortina’s stunning mountain setting
🌟 the sparkling visual works of Mickalene Thomas
🌟 the genre-defying music of Rosalía
🌟 the restorative power of analog rituals
🌟 Japan’s art in nature (and nature in art)

It’s Fashion Week. All month long. While everyone is in Paris, but we’re looking at chic luxury hotels in London, New York, and Milan.

🍸 Broadwick Soho
Gliding through the red door, you’ll feel like you’ve walked onto a flamboyant, theatrical, and unapologetically bold movie set, where every inch whirls with color, patterns, textures, and elephants galore (the hotel’s mascot).

🍸 Baccarat Hotel
The façade shimmers like spun crystal and the lobby and Grand Salon gleam from chandeliers and stemware scattering light across silver-leaf paneling and pleated silk walls. Good thing you dressed up: The vibe here is Parisian glamour merged with Midtown Manhattan edge.

🍸 Portrait Milano
It feels like one of Milan’s best-kept secrets: a hotel within in a former 16th-century seminary in a piazza that had all but been forgotten for two decades. It’s part house-museum and part high-fashion salon, with rich woods, plush velvets, piles of art books, bold accents of cardinal red and emerald, and corridors that echo with stories of centuries past. Perfect for fashion lovers chasing la dolce vita.

First impressions of in London. The former US Embassy is now a hotel so swank they have an art concierge (Elisabeth Antonsen, and she’s happy to talk about their extensive collection). Fun fact I learned from her: The embassy was built at five stories, but because Eero Saarinen’s original designs were for seven, got permission to go up. Hence that awesome atrium. One restaurant is an homage to Jackie Kennedy, down to her hairdo gracing the menu. (Oh, for an elegant First Lady. And a Kennedy with a working brain.) A statue of Eisenhower stands proudly across the street. (Oh, for a president worthy of a statue or pride.) We can’t wait to come back for a proper visit. -

When you need a place that feels like real summer vacation — for yourself, your partner, your kids, your parents, and your interior mind — I suggest making your way to the living shoreline of the Chesapeake, a beautiful estuary teeming with wildlife — a lovely and supremely chill stretch of which is stewarded by the ecologically minded team at … three hours from DC and an hour from Richmond. It’s nearly 80 years old but never looked better. -

The American summer is officially underway. If you haven’t yet booked your sunny getaways, start with these beachy resorts in Cape Cod, the Hamptons, the Florida Keys, and Los Angeles.

⛵️ Will it be sunset yoga or the silent disco? Smores or stargazing? Paddle board or kayaks? A parasail high above the keys or a sustainable Dock to Dish backcountry fishing expedition? You can do it all in Key Largo, Florida. And if the lazies hit, you can settle into a gentle sway in the hammock forest.

☀️ When the vacation checklist calls for maximum fun and minimal planning — and easy access to major cities in the Northeast USA — the award-winning in Brewster should top the list. It’s a perfect family getaway — especially when different family members have different ideas of fun.

🪻Hydrangeas. Adirondack chairs. Loungers by the saltwater pool. Welcome to the Hamptons, and specifically to on the water in Sag Harbor, the town that’s a little less blingy and a little more classy than those other Hamptons.

🏖️ Is Santa Monica — with its great pier, boutiques, restaurants, and farmers’ market — the best beach neighborhood in L.A.? We’d like to see another one vie for the title. , the relaxed, all-suite oceanfront hotel that’s part of Hilton’s luxury portfolio (work those Honors points!), is the place for an upscale but easygoing vacation.
