A Cabmans Shelter at Russell Square, London.
Established in 1875 by George Armstrong, editor of the Globe Newspaper and The Earl of Shaftesbury who created the Cabmen’s Shelter Fund in 1875. At one time with over 60 in the capital, there are now just 13 of these Grade II listed structures left. Still providing shelter, hot food and non-alcoholic drinks to black cab drivers in London today.
Designed by architect Maximilian Clarke, the distinctive green colour made them instantly recognisable and easy to spot. They were built to be the same width as a horse and cart, as per Metropolitan Police rules at the time and to ensure that they could sit by the side of the road.
