An important development for the UK tourism industry, with the Government setting out a timeline for the proposed overnight visitor levy for the first time.

In a statement to the House of Commons on Tuesday, Prime Minister Andy Burnham committed to fiscal devolution, “starting with the ability to set an overnight visitor levy to commence towards the end of the financial year 27-28”.

For destinations and the wider travel industry, ensuring the sector has a voice as plans develop will be crucial.

Eddy Leviten, Executive Director at the Tourism Alliance, said: “The visitor economy is worth £147bn a year, supports 2.4 million jobs, and generates £52bn in tax revenues. A levy designed without the industry at the table puts that at risk. We will make sure the industry is at the table.”
