I can’t tell you if I got into these caves, once a hermitage. You’ll have to come over to my Patreon to find out because the authorities definitely don’t want people in there!

Over the past few years Mudlarking, the pastime of scouring river banks for archeology, has become incredibly popular both with those who do it, and those who like to watch videos of, of hear about, new finds.
Expert Mudlarker, Lara Maiklem .mudlark joined me at Harvington History Festival where we talked about how tidal rivers become archaeological treasure troves, the challenges mudlarks face, and what incredible relics she has uncovered.
The interview with is premiering on Youtube today at 6pm UK (7th May) at Youtube.com/@ britishhistory

There was no way I was going to be able to walk past this without taking a closer look!
Mitton Chapel, the Georgian one that is, was demolished “after the 1st World War” (I have been unable to find any specific date) but the footprint remains, the footprint of which is used now as a burial place for ashes.
The graveyard is full of fascinating tombs, many are large and contain multiple members of the same family. The largest one I found, and almost missed because it was so hidden in the undergrowth, had no plaques left to tell us who is resting in peace in there.
It was a tranquil spot and I felt the need to thank all the souls resting there for letting me share this spot.
Follow me as I explore history, and from this year, I am exploring a lot of it on foot in addition to the tours and other history travel.

It’s not going so well, my new hobby. Walking was supposed to be complete downtime - fresh air, no AirPods, no work but, the thing is….my work is history and I have been surrounded by it on my walks and I just LOVE IT and want to share it with you.
It may not be what I had intended but it is so much better!!
The history I find whilst out on my walks is going to be a new feature here, and eventually on my podcast too I even have some ideas for a new arm of my tour business.
In a world of chaos and worry - come with me on some lovely walks and enjoy the history I find on them :-)

When Elizabeth I died there were more potential successors than just James VI of Scotland. One was Arbella Stuart - here is where her claim came from.

Lady Jane Grey or, more accurately, Queen Jane is often seen merely as a victim. But that victimhood narrative has hidden Jane’s character from the common perception of her.
My interview with the wonderful , filmed , is out at 6pm in 30th April 2026, on the British History Youtube channel and podcast.
