Black Friars in Gloucester is enchanting. Founded by Henry III in 1239, it saw over 300 years of monastic life before it was closed in 1538 as part of Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries and sold to a local cloth merchant.
I was at Black Friars this week to take part in Gloucester History Festival and I’ve written about what I was up to there, as well as more about the place itself, in my latest Substack.

Looking forward to my first event Gloucester History Festival as part of their Scriptorium programme.
I will be joined by master mason Andrew Ziminski Andrew Ziminski FSA. Church Stonemason & Author. to discuss how churches provide a particularly valuable link to people of the past; the people who built them, and those who used them.

Taking a few examples of incredible masonry skill, we will travel through history.

Today I headed down to London to meet with my fellow judges for the Historical Writers Association non-fiction award.
We had a fantastic lunch at The Boot and Flogger, not far from Borough Market, and opposite the Crossbones cemetery - which you may have heard us talk about on History After Dark.

We discussed this year’s long-list candidates.
Great food and wine while discussing great history books with brilliant people - what a lovely day!

It’s almost time for the fabulous Gloucester History Festival again and this time I have my own event and I can’t wait!
As part of the festival there is a series of free events being held in the Scriptorium, including one hosted my yours truly. I will be joined by Andrew Ziminski to talk about how churches provide a tangible link to the past, both the people who built them and those who used them, and the meanings we can find in their designs.

Join us at 1:15pm on Monday 14th Sept in the Scriptorium of Blackfriars, Gloucester.

If you can’t make it, don’t worry, we will be recording the event for the British History podcast.


The following day, 15th September, I have the wonderful honour of introducing on to stage Dr Nicola Tallis, for her talk ‘Lady Jane Grey: Crown of Blood’. I have immense respect for Nicola and her work, she has taken part in British History Tours tours as a speaker and been a guest on the British History podcast a number of times, so it is a great pleasure to do this.
