How “Bedlam” Got Its Name

Few words capture chaos quite like “bedlam” and its origins lie in one of London’s darkest institutions.
The building now occupied by the Imperial War Museum was once home to Bethlem Royal Hospital, better known simply as Bedlam.

Founded in 1250 near Bishopsgate, the institution began as a religious priory caring for the poor. Over time, it evolved into a hospital for the mentally ill, though conditions were often grim…

At a stage, Londoners began paying to visit the hospital as entertainment. Crowds would observe patients as though attending a spectacle, and the name “Bedlam” gradually became synonymous with disorder and madness itself.

Public attitudes slowly changed, particularly after King George III experienced mental illness. Reform followed, and in 1815 a new hospital opened in Lambeth, the very site now occupied by the Imperial War Museum.
From medieval priory to notorious asylum to museum of conflict and remembrance, few London buildings carry such a powerful story.

Travel is often at its best when everyone can enjoy it together. With Black Cab Heritage Tours we create exactly the kind of experience that’s comfortable, engaging, and designed so no one misses out.

A mother visiting London for the first time was able to take in many of the city’s major landmarks without the long walks that can make sightseeing difficult. Meanwhile, her daughter who had visited before saw familiar places with fresh eyes, learning stories and details she had never known despite previous trips.

What made their day more meaningful was being able to enjoy the experience in their mother tongue, turning their tour into a welcoming and personal experience from the very beginning.

Our tours allow guests to see London in a way that suits their pace, their needs, and the people they’re travelling with.

Hidden in the quiet streets of Islington lies one of London’s greatest forgotten achievements: a river that is not a river at all.

The New River, begun in the early 1600s, was created to solve one of the city’s most urgent problems: clean water. As London’s population surged, the Thames had become increasingly polluted, bringing disease and hardship.

Enter Sir Hugh Myddelton, who proposed the extraordinary solution to channel fresh water from Hertfordshire to London. The project was immense for its time at nearly 40 miles long and dug largely by hand as it cut across fields, estates, and stubborn opposition.

When money ran short, King James I stepped in, funding the venture in return for a share of the profits.

By 1613, fresh water was flowing into reservoirs at Clerkenwell, transforming life in the capital and supplying Londoners for more than two centuries.

Though no longer serving central London, parts of the New River still survive today, especially around Canonbury!

Before bridges, buses, or the Underground, the River Thames was London’s great highway ruled by the watermen.

Licensed from 1556, these skilled boatmen ferried passengers across the city from busy landing places such as Whitehall Steps. At their height, more than 10,000 watermen worked the river, you could say they were London’s original taxi drivers.

Yet carrying passengers was only part of the trade.

When business was quiet, watermen could earn extra money recovering goods from the river… and sometimes that meant bodies. In one of London’s grimmer quirks, a co**se brought ashore in Southwark earned one shilling, while the same recovery on the north bank brought only sixpence.

Then there was the deadly challenge of “shooting the bridge.” At old London Bridge, narrow arches created violent currents. Passengers would disembark and walk across, while the waterman attempted the hazardous passage alone.

From cries of “Oars! Oars!” along the banks to risking death in the rapids, London’s watermen lived by courage, skill, and the unpredictable Thames.

Some tours are enjoyable while others stay with you long after the trip has ended. For our guests, a private black cab tour becomes one of those experiences. It’s the kind of day where London feels less like a big city and more like somewhere you truly get to know.

From the moment you set off, the journey is relaxed and effortless. Famous landmarks, quiet backstreets, and hidden corners are all brought to life through stories, humour, and thoughtful local insight. Nothing is rushed or overly scripted. There is always time to take in the atmosphere, ask questions, and simply enjoy being in the city.

What guests often value most is that balance between guidance and freedom. The route flows naturally, but there is always space to pause, look closer, or follow a new curiosity as the day unfolds.

For Black Cab Heritage Tours guests, London becomes a place you connect with in a real and memorable way.
