London in winter can be a sometimes unforgiving place. Lulled into a false sense of security by the trappings of public transport and cafes you forget how the cold can suddenly pe*****te your skin with a gust of wind. Luckily the city is not short of incredible indoor spaces, giving much needed rejuvenation to cheeks and fingers alike.

The Pool of London hosted ships bringing a multitude into the City for years. Today, all that remains of the trade, which disappeared in the 1960s due to containerisation, are the red brick wharves that line the Thames just beyond Tower Bridge and a handful of other buildings.

Located at the heart of the old Roman city, Leadenhall market dates back to 1321 and has been serving City clientele meat and poultry ever since. Today’s current building is late Victorian and features in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone as the area around and entrance to Diagon Alley.

A part of the DLR that hangs over some of East London’s busiest roads, the stretch out towards City Airport can sometimes feel like it dumps you in the middle of nowhere; it’s a good walk from even the nearest homes. However, opened in the late 80s the Docklands Light Railway now provides a life line to a part of London long ignored by tube and rail expansion.
