When you normally ask someone to name a powerful woman from England’s pre-Conquest history, they will without doubt talk about Boudicca.

And while it is only right that her doomed rebellion against the behemoth that was Rome be taught at schools, we seem to miss the next 1,000 years of history of England’s women!

The daughter of Alfred the Great and his Mercian wife Ealhswith, she was married off for political gain, but went on to hold and wield power in her own right. She led undefeated armies, forced Viking warlords to swear fealty and followed in her father’s footsteps by building burhs across reclaimed Mercian territory.

Her influence also reached as far as the future first king of England, Æthelstan who grew up under her tutelage.

It’s time we learn about the powerful women of England in its early years, starting with the absolute powerhouse that is Æthelflæd, Lady of Mercia
