“Ittoqqortoormiit feels like an ‘Arctic Brigadoon’—a place so remote and unchanged, it could vanish into myth the moment you leave.” - Secret Atlas visitor to Ittoqqortoormitt aboard Vikingfjord, 2024

The town of Ittoqqortoormiit sits at the entrance to iceberg-strewn Scoresbysund, the largest fjord system on Earth, and is a key access point to Northeast Greenland National Park—the world’s largest national park.

This remote East Greenlandic outpost is a place of profound isolation, rugged beauty, and cultural resilience. The surrounding wilderness is breathtaking: colossal icebergs, shifting sea ice, and Arctic wildlife like polar bears, musk oxen, and nesting seabirds. It’s one of the best places in Greenland for raw wildlife encounters.

If you've ever stood at the edge of the Arctic and felt the bite of the wind off the ice cap, you’ve already begun to understand the strength and ingenuity it takes to live there.

The Greenlandic Inuit are the Indigenous people of Greenland, and their roots run deep across time, stretching back thousands of years through migration, adaptation, and cultural evolution.

The Inuit, whose name means 'the people,' form a cultural group spread across the Arctic regions of Alaska, Canada, and Greenland. This shared heritage forms the earliest chapter of Inuit origins and the history of the Arctic Inuit.

Whales are at the very heart of the ocean ecosystem, playing a vital role in maintaining its health and balance. Their presence contributes to nutrient cycling, carbon sequestration, and the support of biodiversity.

Not only are Arctic whales crucial to the ocean, but they are also a source of wonder for those lucky enough to encounter them.

❄️🐋 What whale can you encounter in Greenland?

Between July and September, you have the best chance of spotting:
• Humpback whales
• Fin whales
• Minke whales
• Blue whales

in 1914, Ernest Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic 'Endurance' Expedition 1914-1917, departed for South Georgia.

Less than one week prior to his departure, on 28 July, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. This quickly led to a collapse in peace between Europe’s great powers. On August 4, while anchored off Southend, he read in a daily newspaper the order for general mobilisation of troops and supplies along with calls for volunteer soldiers. Shackleton immediately returned to the 'Endurance', gathered all hands, and told his men that he would send a telegram to the Admiralty offering the ships, stores and services to the country in the event of war breaking out. Within an hour after sending the telegram, Shackleton received a reply from the Admiralty with the single word "Proceed". Within two hours, another arrived from Winston Churchill in which he thanked them for their offer but desired that the Trans-Antarctic expedition go on. That night, World War I broke out after German troops crossed the border into Belgium.

Shackleton's original plans for the expedition were to complete an 1,800 mile journey across the Antarctic continent via the South Pole. A supporting party, called the 'Ross Sea Party' were tasked to lay supply depots from the Ross Sea region of the continent to enable the journey. However, early onset ice in the Weddell Sea slowed Shackleton's progress, and eventually resulted in the 'Endurance' becoming frozen in an ice floe. These events subsequently led to one of the most famous rescue stories of all time!

Imagine standing at the edge of a world where ice meets the sky, where ancient glaciers crack and thunder into pristine waters, and where polar bears roam freely across untouched wilderness.

This is Greenland, the world's largest island and one of its last true wildernesses - a place that will leave you breathless with its raw beauty and unchanged power. As climate change reshapes the Arctic at a remarkable pace, this amazing destination stands as both a testament to nature's glory and a distinct reminder of what we stand to lose. Now is the time to experience this wonder.

"There are cruises.
There are expeditions.

And then… there is Secret Atlas.

This isn’t just another trip – it’s an entirely different league. Not a tour, but a revelation.

While other ships stick to familiar routes, Secret Atlas ventures to places that barely have names – untouched bays, nameless islands, surreal landscapes that look more lunar than earthly. And in the middle of it all: us. Just twelve people. No show program. No pool deck. No bingo night.

Just silence. Discovery. And the overwhelming feeling that this journey was designed exclusively for us.

Yes, it’s more expensive.
And yes – it’s worth every cent.

This was my second time traveling with Secret Atlas. And I’m quite sure it won’t be my last.

Secret Atlas is for those who value time.
For those who would rather share silence with a glacier than small talk with 400 strangers in a hot tub.
For those who seek real connection – to nature, to people, to rare moments.

If you avoid mass tourism like bad Wi-Fi…
If the word “camera” means landscape, not selfies…
If you'd rather be breathless from awe than from a crowded buffet line –
then this is your kind of journey.

Secret Atlas doesn’t advertise.
It doesn’t need to.

Because once you’ve traveled with them, you’ll understand:
this isn’t just a trip.
It’s something that stays with you." - Gregor

AMAZING NEWS!
After nearly 90 years locked beneath Arctic ice, Roald Amundsen’s expedition ship Maud has come home. She now joins Fram and Gjøa—completing the trio that tells the story of one of history’s most remarkable polar explorers.

At Secret Atlas, we have a deep admiration for Amundsen—not just for his legendary feats like reaching the South Pole first, but for the quiet determination, ingenuity, and respect for polar environments that defined his expeditions.
Maud’s return is more than a maritime salvage—it's a tribute to a golden era of exploration, and to the enduring human spirit of discovery.

After nearly 90 years beneath Arctic ice, Roald Amundsen’s expedition ship MAUD has returned to Norway. Raised from the seafloor in Canada and towed across the Atlantic, she joins FRAM and GJØA as the final piece in honoring one of history’s greatest explorers. A triumphant homecoming for a legendary vessel.

Secret Atlas - The Home Of Expedition Micro Cruises

Secret Atlas is the Home of Expedition Micro Cruises.

Secret Atlas specialises in small ship cruises (12 guests) led by an experienced expedition guide who will take you to some of the world’s most remote places including Svalbard and Greenland in 2021 with more locations due to be added in 2022.

What makes us different? Our expedition vessels take just 12 guests ensuring a more personal and intimate voyage than larger ships can offer. Small group numbers ensure a richer guest experience and lower impact on the environment, wildlife and cultures we visit.
