Antarctic Peninsula, Secret Atlas new expedition micro-cruise, Aureum, has shot to the top of our list. Limited to just 36 passengers, she’s set to be the first ship of her size in Antarctic waters come November 2027. Four Zodiacs allow everyone to go ashore together, with a polar guide for every six guests, and 8 single cabins reserved for solo explorers. Most trips bypass the Drake Passage in favour of flying into Antarctica from southern Chile - making an excellent case for a few days in Patagonia en route.

Hidden corners of Santo Domingo through the lens of Victor Stonem. Founded in 1498, its Zona Colonial was the first permanent European settlement in the Americas; behind its heavy wooden doors and grand façades are rooms crowded with religious art, carved saints, cool stone cloisters and exuberant tropical courtyards. There’s a new, ultra-private way to stay at Caiman • Pantanal, Brasil, the pioneering 53,000-hectare working ranch and conservation reserve in Brazil’s southern Pantanal.

Set 13km from the main lodge, Casa Cordilheira has seven bungalows arranged around a central house with an infinity pool overlooking the forest and grasslands. It comes with a private chef and 24/7 host, alongside its own safari vehicle and dedicated field guides for game drives, night safaris, forest walks and canoe trips.

Around it, cattle graze the open plains, Pantaneiro cowboys work on horseback, and the reserve has an incredible diversity of wildlife. The main draw is the elusive jaguar; once rarely seen here, years of dedicated conservation work by Onçafari have made Caiman one of the best places on Earth to see them in the wild. Caiman is also home to projects studying and protecting hyacinth macaws, tapirs and giant anteaters.

Postcards from Argentina’s steamy, subtropical northeast at Estancia Don Joaquin, a fifth-generation family-run ranch in Corrientes, where cattle country stretches across huge grasslands broken up by marshes, lagoons and streams. Capybara, caiman, rheas and marsh deer share the landscape with with more than 350 species of bird, from jabiru storks to yellow cardinals and strange-tailed tyrants. A couple of hours away lie the Esteros del Iberá, one of the world’s great wetlands and home to Iberá National Park.

In Peru’s Colca Valley, traditional dress is anything but understated: scarlet polleras, velvet jackets and bodices embroidered with flowers, birds and geometric motifs. The valley’s two historic peoples, the Collagua and Cabana, have their own distinctive styles, most visible in women’s hats and dress.

The making of these intricate textiles is a fine art, still carried out by hand: wool is drawn out between finger and thumb and spun into yarn on a drop spindle, before moving to the loom, where the threads are worked by hand.

Hidden in tropical forest at the quieter northern end of Santa Teresa, Casa Dewa might just be the coolest beach house in town. The six-bedroom villa is built around huge ironwood columns salvaged from the seabed off Indonesia, with a centuries-old Javanese rice barn incorporated into the upper floor. Inside, carved Indian antiques and pieces collected in Bali sit alongside furniture designed by the owner, former model and interior designer Carlota Dörring-Meadows.

There’s a pool and yoga shala, and a path through the garden leads straight onto 150 metres of white-sand beach, with one of the area’s best surf peaks out front. A few minutes away, Santa Teresa has gone from little-known surf outpost to lively beach town, with excellent restaurants, beach bars, boutiques and yoga studios lining the dusty road between jungle and Pacific.
