Our 15th Annual Notre Dame London Shakespeare Lecture "Shakespeare Now (but not Hamlet)" was delivered by University of Oxford Professor of Shakespeare Studies Emma Smith.

We are grateful for our ongoing collaborations with the Shakespeare Institute, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, Boika Sokolova, and our distinguished honoree Professor Sir Stanley Wells that allow us to host this event. Fifteen years of the Shakespeare Lecture has been both supported by and itself nourished a wonderful community of global Shakespeare scholars and practitioners.

During Michaelmas term 2025, the Von Hügel Institute welcomed two new interns from the University of Notre Dame (USA). This programme aims to immerse students in their host communities, help them build a global mindset and inspire their professional and personal growth.

The 14th Annual Notre Dame London Shakespeare Lecture was delivered by Rupert Goold (CBE). Goold, who is for known his work as the Artistic Director of the Almeida Theatre and two-time Olivier Award-winning director of work for stage and screen, is highly regarded for his directorial reinvention of Shakespeare's greatest works. He delivered insights into his process as a director and devotee of Shakespeare in his 2025 lecture ‘Shakespeare’s scenes—the good, the bad and the ugly’.

🎨 Students in Lois Oliver’s class “London as Art Capital” have spent this semester immersed in the rich and diverse London art scene. They have visited world-renowned galleries including the National Gallery, British Museum, Tate Modern & Britain, Dulwich Picture Gallery, National Portrait Gallery and Wallace Collection, and explored public monuments, art commissions and street art. They've analyzed historic and contemporary art, traced the legacies of imperial history, considered the fluctuating fortunes of the art market, and created their own original concepts for art exhibitions and public artworks.

A visit from the Notre Dame Institute for Ethics and the Common Good brought sophomores on the Ethics Research Fellowship to London for conversations with local academics and business leaders on the real-world application of ethical study in today's Britain 🇬🇧 Students explored notable research centers including the Royal Institute of International Affairs at Chatham House, the Rhodes Trust at Oxford, and Cambridge University Library.

On a recent trip to Belfast, students visited the Parliament Buildings to meet with Members of the Legislative Assembly of Northern Ireland. For a truly immersive exploration of the sectarian nature of Belfast they followed a walking tour of the barrier-segregated parts of the city, led by both Catholic republican and Protestant loyalist tour guides.

Through political science class "Comparitive Conflict Regulation", students explore the often strife relationship between nationalism and ethnicity—and the complicated history of the United Kindom beyond London. 🇬🇧 🇨🇮

In September the Notre Dame London community gathered to celebrate the inauguration of Fr. Bob Dowd, C.S.C., as the University’s new president. Staff, students and faculty were joined by a group of alumni pursuing graduate studies in the United Kingdom at the University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, and the Royal College of Art.
