Norman arches, Arab domes, and Byzantine mosaics all sit side by side in Palermo. Once you really see those layers, the whole city opens up in front of you.

This is the kind of place the art-history side of me wants to slow right down for: a week staying put in one city, going deep with a local expert instead of rushing through five. Palermo rewards that kind of attention.
