Sigiriya - Lion Rock - is one of the most extraordinary things you can stand in front of anywhere in Asia. The scale of it from a distance is almost absurd. And then you climb it - past the ancient lion paw gateway, up through frescoed gallery walls, to a summit with a swimming pool that has somehow survived 1,500 years - and the views across the Sri Lankan jungle stretch as far as you can see in every direction.

It is genuinely one of those places that makes you question everything you thought you knew about the ancient world.
