There's nowhere in England quite like Glastonbury. It's a small Somerset town with a high street full of crystal shops, tarot readers and Viking craft stalls. It has the ruins of an abbey where 12th-century monks dug up a grave and claimed to have found the bodies of King Arthur and Guinevere.

There's a hill above the town, the Tor, that was once an island surrounded by marshland and is still used as a gathering site every summer solstice.

At the base of the Tor is the Chalice Well, one of the oldest continuously tended gardens in Britain. The water runs red from the iron in the rock. The legend says it's because Joseph of Arimathea buried the Holy Grail there. The gardens are open year round and people have been making pilgrimages to the spring for centuries.

We run a full day trip from London to Glastonbury with entry to the Abbey included!

Starting again on Easter Sunday, Sunday 5th April, is the Isle of Wight day tour: https://andersontours.co.uk/tour/isle-of-wight-day-trip-from-london/

An early start but once we are at the port the relaxation begins. Sail across to the Island and visit Osborne House, then travel down to Sandown / Shanklin for our lunch stop. Here you can either stroll along the beach, have fish and chips and maybe rounding off with an ice cream.

Or you could explore the ancient ravine of Shankin Chine, formed at the end of the last ice age as a river ran down from the hills towards the sea. Once the haunt of smugglers bringing in contraband Brandy from France, in 1817 interpid Victorian William Colenutt built a path and opened it for tourists. So now you can wander through the ferns, moss and tress that give the Chine it prehistoric feel and hike up to the watermill at the top of the hill.

Shanklin is also the site of the Pluto Line and is marked near the beach. This stands for Pipeline Under the Sea and relates to a World War II piece of infrastructure that was used to send oil to the troops after D-Day. It was dangerous for tankers to cross the channel and sail into war torn Vichy France so a pipeline was built instead for Operation Overlord in 1944.

Why not book a lovely Isle of Wight tour this summer season, travelling weekly.

Calling all Tudor fans! Our new Leeds & Hever Castle tour can also be called, The Tudor Tour, as both castles were used by Henry VIII and three of his six wives. (Wives 1,2 and 4)

Leeds Castle became know as the Queen's Castle after being bought by Eleanor of Castile, wife of Edward I, and then it was passed down to succeeding Queens including the first wife of Henry VIII, Catherine of Aragon. Catherine and Henry used this castle as a country get away in better times in their marriage. They were married for 20 years and it was initially a happy marriage but Catherine could never give him the son and heir he needed so he started looking around.

In the afternoon we travel to Hever Castle, a beautiful medieval home to the Boleyn family and Henry VIIIs second wife Anne Boleyn. The Boleyn family story is one of ambition and achievement with hatter Geoffrey Bullen travelling to London to find his fortune. He became the wealthy Lord Mayor of London, buying Hever Castle for his family, which became Anne's childhood home. Anne's father Thomas was an educated diplomat and a keen jouster which brought him into Henry's circles and then began the trouble that took Anne to the Tower. However at Hever we learn about their romance in the early days where Henry was besotted and desperate to marry his beloved. This was before he beheaded her.

Another of Henry's wives also lived at Hever and this was wife number 4, Anne of Cleves. Henry had only seen a painting of her before he agreed to marry and have her shipped over from Dusseldorf, but on meeting they did not get along. He condemned her as being hideous and gave her the nick name, the Mare of Flanders, which was very embarrassing for Anne. However she fared better than some of the other wives as on her divorce she was given Hever Castle, a large sum of money and eventually became a good friend of Henry and his children.

On our Glastonbury & Cheddar Gorge we visit pre-historic Cheddar Gorge in the afternoon with its intriguing caves. The Gorge was cut over a million years ago and as the River Yeo Cheddar swirled its way through, it carved out both Gough's Cave and Cox's Cave. As the last Ice Age began to wane people moved back into northern Europe and crossed over to Britain using a long gone land bridge called Doggerland.

Gough's Cave in particular provided shelter for these early humans settling in the thawing north. The earliest human bones found have been dated to around 15,000 years ago where people could only really survive in sheltered gorges and caves. However these bones show signs of cannibalism including a skull that had been shaped into a drinking bowl.

Another skeleton dated to around 10,000 years ago was found complete and is known as Cheddar Man. DNA was taken from his teeth and a direct living descendant was found living just around the corner! A local teacher called Adrain Taggart, and they even have similar facial expressions.

Gough's cave was excavated in the Victoria era by Richard Gough and his sons who ran it as a show cave for tourists. When they arrived there they found poor Victoria families living inside the caves. These families worked the lead mines of the Mendips Hills and also doubled as cave guides, leading people through with oil lamps. The caves have also been used to mature the famous cheddar cheese for centuries as the cold steady temperature of the cave is a perfect place for doing this.

Join us this summer on this trip back in time and explore this wonderful prehistoric location.

Its back! The bucket list tour, the one and only - Stonehenge Special Access! https://andersontours.co.uk/tour/stonehenge-special-access-evening/

Starting on Friday 13th March this is a very special tour begins again combining three different neolithic sites in Wiltshire. Step back in time into this truly ancient landscape and learn all about the Wessex culture of 5000 years ago. The tour culminates in entrance to the inner circle of Stonehenge, an experience that is limited to a small number of people.

We first visit a 5500 Neolithic tomb called West Kennet Long Barrow. This was used as an ossuary by the Neolithic peoples and you can now go inside this remarkable structure. After this visit we go to Avebury, a cute medieval village, set inside a stone circle that is 14 times larger than Stonehenge. Your guide will walk you around the stones telling you their stories, both ancient and medieval. Then you will have a break for lunch, maybe at the haunted Red Lion pub?

The grand finale of this tour is the visit to Stonehenge where an English Heritage archaeologist will es**rt you into the inner circle and tell you the history of the site. See the Bronze Age arrow graffiti along with Christopher Wren's signature, mischievously carved into a stone. Stonehenge is beautiful in any weather, you will enjoy!

Built-in the 14th century, the Chapter House is the biggest of its type in England. Spiritual leaders use it for prayer and council meetings. The room is a reflective space with a beautiful interior as a religious aid.

The Chapter House is by the Cloister, making it a convenient section of the cathedral to stop by briefly when visiting Canterbury Cathedral.

Hampton Court Palace is a quirky mix of Tudor and Baroque styles, and a great day out, not only with its stunning architecture but its magnificent grounds and gardens. It's often used as a film location and you may recognise it from series such as Bridgerton, so get ready with your cameras and smiles!

The building was started by Henry VIII's advisor Cardinal Wolsey, and upon his death was completed by the King. This was essentially Henry VIII's 'party house' with feasting, music, sports and even a wine fountain in the courtyard where he and his friends spent the summers. In this Tudor section of the Palace Henry had plumbing, toilets, (the wine fountain of course) and grand kitchens that provided for hundreds of people each week.

As you make your way through the Palace the style changes and the back area, leading on to the gardens, morphs into the Baroque style of architecture. This section was built by William and Mary in the 1600s, who were the penultimate Monarchs of the Stuart Dynasty. Go through this section to find the formal gardens, the rose gardens, the kitchen gardens and then the wilderness and maze sections.

Join us this spring and summer as we have added Hampton Court as new half day tour and you can book it here: https://andersontours.co.uk/tour/hampton-court-palace-including-tickets/
