Murder in the Abbey! In 1378 Robert Hauley(or Hawle) was murdered in the Abbey, along with his fellow squire John Shakel. They’d been involved in a dispute over the ransom of an Aragonese nobleman and were imprisoned in the Tower of London. Hauley and Shakel managed to escape and sought sanctuary in the Abbey. The Constable of the Tower and 50 men pursued them, broke in and, in the ensuing fracas, killed Hauley and a priest. For that they were excommunicated.
You’ll find this memorial in Poets’ Corner, to the right of CS Lewis.

Marble Hill was the home of Henrietta Howard, Countess of Suffolk (1689-1767). Orphaned young, she married a s**t but ended up as the mistress to King George II. Cultured and intelligent she escaped her husband and established a home by the Thames where she attracted a circle of intellectual friends. Her home is now run by English Heritage and is well worth a visit.

Coombe Conduit was one of a series of conduits that supplied water to Hampton Court Palace. This one dates from the reign of Henry VIII and was still in use in the 1800s. On the fourth weekend of the summer months English Heritage open it up to the public. Well worth a visit!

Lambeth Palace, the London home of the Archbishops of Canterbury. Thanks to the charity Mind, this historic complex was open as part of their Heritage Open Palace Experience (HOPE). I saw Victorian reception rooms, the restored chapel, a medieval crypt, stunning hammer beam roof - and Abp William Laud’s tortoise.

Really enjoyed exploring and researching Spitalfields for an upcoming September walk for the City Livery Club. Early Georgian houses, Victorian almshouses and soup kitchens, medieval remains, synagogues and mosques. And a goat.

Installation of the 530th Master of the Worshipful Company of Vintners. By tradition the Wine Porter sweeps the streets as the new Master and Wardens proceed to St James Garlickhythe for a service of thanksgiving. Good luck Richard!

The Aircraft Factory was once a Waring & Gillow factory which made furniture and upholstery. During WW1 it was converted to make biplanes, then during WW2 was used to make the celebrated Mosquito aeroplane. Glad the name’s been preserved.

Thomas Guy may be more famous for founding his eponymous hospital but he also founded almshouses in Tamworth, where he was MP. However, he made his money by being one of the few investors who made money from the South Sea Company.
