Murder in the Abbey! In 1378 Robert Hauley(or Hawle) was murdered in the Abbey, along with his fellow squire John Shakel. They’d been involved in a dispute over the ransom of an Aragonese nobleman and were imprisoned in the Tower of London. Hauley and Shakel managed to escape and sought sanctuary in the Abbey. The Constable of the Tower and 50 men pursued them, broke in and, in the ensuing fracas, killed Hauley and a priest. For that they were excommunicated.
You’ll find this memorial in Poets’ Corner, to the right of CS Lewis.
