Gerandigini Falls: A Hidden Gem in Nuwara Eliya District
Gerandigini Falls (or Garandi Falls) is one of the most stunning yet underrated waterfalls in the central hills of Sri Lanka. Its unique serpentine flow and immense height make it a must-see destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers.
Key Highlights and Features
Impressive Height: The main drop is about 100 meters, and the entire cascade (series of falls) is approximately 270 meters (886 feet), making it one of the tallest waterfalls in Sri Lanka.
Unique Name: The name "Garandi" translates to "rat snake" in Sinhala. It is so named because the water winds its way along the dark rock face in a zigzag pattern resembling the movement of a snake.
Location: Located in the Pussellawa/Ramboda area of ββNuwara Eliya district, it provides a stunning backdrop to the Kotmale Valley.
How to reach Gerandigini Falls (Travel Tips)
If you are planning a trip to Nuwara Eliya, there are three main routes to access this waterfall:
Thawalamthenna route: Take the Kandy-Nuwara Eliya road (A5) from the Thawalamathenna junction. You can drive through scenic tea plantations to reach the base of the waterfall.
Bluefield Tea Factory View: Turn around near the Bluefield Tea Factory and head towards Airi Tamil School. From here, a short 300-meter walk offers one of the best panoramic views for landscape photography.
Summit Trail (Rothschild Estate): Those looking to reach the top of the falls can trek through the Rothschild Tea Estate Trail, which offers a bird's-eye view of the surrounding mountains.
Travel Tips for Your Trip
Best Time to Visit: The falls are at their most majestic during or shortly after the monsoon season, but the trail can be slippery.
Hiking Gear: Wear shoes with good grip. The trek through the tea estates can be steep and muddy.
Leech Protection: As the area is lush and humid, be sure to protect yourself from leeches. Carrying leech repellent or wearing leech socks is recommended.
Sustainability: Help preserve the beauty of Sri Lanka's waterfalls by leaving no plastic or trash behind
