One of the highlights of my recent trip to Shanghai was a visit to Jade Buddha Temple. It's near the more famous Jing'An temple, and a lot more low key.

It's in a quiet, residential area so you can just walk in and you don't need tickets.

It's a really serene and peaceful place that blends straight into the neighbourhood.

It was great to be back in China for two weeks, and on my last day I recorded an extended video for our YouTube channel about the teaching market in China in 2026.

I made a few key points:

➡️ Finding a teaching job in China is harder nowadays than it was in the past.
There are four key categories of available jobs for new teachers: state schools, private kindergartens, private high schools/ primary schools, private training centres.

One of the main reasons there are fewer jobs is that not many state/ public schools now hire foreign teachers. Private high/ primary schools are occasionally available but very competitive. This means the most available jobs are at private kindergartens or at training centres.

➡️ Our key advice given this is twofold: 1) Be flexible about location and school choice and keep an open mind about all the options outlined above. 2) Be prepared for a competitive hiring process that includes a video call with the school and a teaching demo. The more competitive the school type you are going for, the more demanding the demo will be.

➡️ Despite the process getting harder, our teachers in China love the experience and many of them stay in China longer term. That's because living and working in such a unique culture is a life experience like no other, and you're saving money doing it. Salaries are not quite as good as in the past but still very comfortable. At most jobs you'll save around a third of your salary every month, and live comfortably.

I went to Zhujiajiao Water Town today and it was great 😀

It's on the outskirts of Shanghai but available by metro (stop Zhujiajiao).

The ancient town is quite big, we spent a few hours walking around.

It was interesting that after not seeing many foreign tourists in my nearly two weeks in China so far, we saw lots of them today.

Totally worth it in my opinion, check it out if you're spending time in Shanghai 😎

I visited M50 Art District in Shanghai today and I wasn't sure what to expect.

It's based in an old textile factory where 100 artists have studios and display their work.

There's a wide variety of art, an my favourites included an exhibition about autism awareness in China, ceramic dumplings, and a photo exhibition of people that moved to Shanghai from minority regions within China.

If this is your sort of thing, I'd really recommend a visit 👀

I took a walk on the Bund in Shanghai today, and it's such an incredible place to be 😎

It was the first time I took the ferry across the river, which only costs 2RMB (less than £0.25) 😅

The ferry docks at a relatively quiet place in Pudong where there's surprisingly few people around, I'd highly recommend it.

You van pay for the ferry with either your Alipay pass that you use for the metro, or with cash.

I took a walk in a local park here in Shanghai, and I saw groups of people singing like this in many different places.

The other day I was able to watch a Chinese movie called Upstream.

It's a movie about the lives of Chinese delivery drivers.

I've been meaning to watch it for some time because the delivery industry has been transformed in China in recent years ans you see delivery drivers all over Chinese cities.

Many people order multiple meals in every day, and service is incredibly fast and convenient.

This movie is about the people that make that happen, and their daily lives.

If you're looking to move to China I couldn't recommend watching it more. It goes into family dynamics and the competitiveness inherent in Chinese society, and it's a great watch all round 🇨🇳

It's Arnold here 👋

I'm back in China for a bit and it's great to be here. I'm spending most of my time in Shanghai, but this week I'm in Moganshan for a few days.

Moganshan is only an hour or so from Shanghai and it's a town surrounded by mountains 🏔️

It has a very distinctive vibe that reminds me of times I've spent in the French Alps, it's great.

China has so many interesting places to explore, there's always something new 😎🇨🇳

It's exciting that some of our long-term teachers have started to arrive and are kicking off their teaching adventures here in China.

Have the best time and I can't wait to hear about it!
