The ocean covers 70% of our planet. This World Ocean Day, we're sharing three places where protecting it isn't a policy, it's the point.
At the Marbella Club on the Andalusian coast, a seahorse repopulation project is quietly doing something the Mediterranean urgently needs. In partnership with Fundación Aula del Mar, the hotel is breeding both native seahorse species on-site, with the long-term goal of returning them to the coast on its doorstep.
At Bawah Reserve in Indonesia's Anambas Archipelago, resident marine biologists relocate turtle nests from vulnerable beaches to safer ground, giving each one a fighting chance. Both green sea turtles and hawksbills nest on the islands each year. Over 1,500 hatchlings make it to the water because of that work, and guests can be there when it happens.
At The Datai Langkawi, the Fish for the Future programme is working to restore Datai Bay's coral and return sustainable fishing to its waters, in partnership with MareCet, Malaysia's only marine mammal conservation NGO. Guests can adopt a coral from the resort's nursery and snorkel out to plant it themselves. The hotel is also pushing to have the bay formally gazetted as a marine protected area.
Three stories. One reason to travel with purpose.
