Today, we've been raising awareness of how speech and language therapists help people with swallowing difficulties, often transforming their lives. We'd like to thank everyone who's taken part in European Swallowing Awareness Day and a special mention has to go to the incredible for posting some FAQs on what it's like swallowing in space. If you'd like to find out more about swallowing, please visit: http://www.givingvoiceuk.org/european-swallowing-awareness-day/

Huge thanks to for posting FAQs for European Swallowing Awareness Day today! Out of this world!

Here's one FAQ specially for European Swallowing Awareness Day today, 6 March: How can you eat or drink in weightlessness? Doesn’t it float back up?

You can swallow and digest food just fine in space. Digestion relies on different muscles in your body that squeeze behind the food you eat, pushing it through you until it's safely in your stomach. This is called ‘peristalsis’. Once the food is in your stomach, you have various valves that keep food in place. However, after a meal you can definitely feel that your food sits more ‘lightly’ in your stomach and I learnt the hard way that you shouldn’t run on the treadmill for at least an hour or two after eating! There aren't many problems associated with eating or drinking, except some astronauts have reported issues with belching, which makes sense because gravity helps swallowed air separate from fluids so, if you need to burp, it can feel a bit like being sick. That's a reason why we don't have fizzy drinks in space...

Ahead of European Swallowing Awareness Day on 6 March, we asked ESA - European Space Agency : How do astronauts swallow in space? Apparently eating and drinking in zero gravity makes them very aware of the swallowing mechanism. ESA kindly shared this video to demonstrate some of the techniques astronauts use.

Please help raise awareness about people's swallowing difficulties and the support that's available to them via speech and language therapists. For more information, visit http://www.givingvoiceuk.org/european-swallowing-awareness-day/
