🏫 Step Into a Showa-Era School

Ever wondered what a Japanese countryside school looked like decades ago?

Omoide no Katabunko is a beautifully preserved wooden schoolhouse near Lake Tazawa in Akita. The branch school closed in 1974, but its classrooms, corridors, desks and school materials have been carefully preserved, offering a nostalgic glimpse into everyday school life in Showa-era Japan.

Surrounded by a forest, it feels especially atmospheric in autumn when the trees around the old school begin to change colour.

🍁 Best time for autumn colours: Usually October to early November, depending on the weather
🚆 From Tokyo Station: Take the Akita Shinkansen to Tazawako Station, then continue by local bus
