What a view from Grainan.
There is a stone ring on a hilltop in Donegal from which you can see five counties on a clear day.
The Grianan of Aileach stands at about 250 metres on Greenan Mountain above the neck of the Inishowen peninsula, looking down over Lough Swilly on one side and Lough Foyle on the other. The name is usually read as the sunny place of Aileach. The walls are drystone, terraced on the inside with steps and passages built into their thickness, and they enclose a circle roughly twenty three metres across.
It was the royal seat of the northern Ui Neill, and it appears on the world map compiled by the Alexandrian geographer Ptolemy in the second century as Regia, a royal place, which makes it one of very few sites in Ireland named in a classical source. In 1101 a King of Munster came north and had it pulled down, and the annals say his men were each ordered to carry away a stone.
What stands now was heavily rebuilt in the 1870s, so a good deal of what you touch is Victorian. The hill and the view and the position are not.
