The transhumance migration trek starts as soon as the Ait ‘Atta transhumance farmers feel the weather is turning. Essentially, as soon as the rains arrive and the temperature drops, it’s time to leave the High Atlas for the South before snow arrives to make the route impossible. Unsurprisingly, on some afternoons we had rain, while the weather was usually perfect to move the livestock the very next morning.

We met a lot of very talented and highly skilled people during our transhumance trek who were happy to share their expertise with us. Here, a shepherd shows us how he uses a simple sling to fire stones with superb accuracy in order to keep his fllock in check and predators at bay.

Close involvement with the sheep forms a critical aspect of the Ait ‘Atta transhumance migration trek. Walking from the High Atlas Mountains to Jebel Sahro over 12 days is, of course, thirsty work.
