Tarr Steps

If you're in the mood for a delightful drive through Exmoor, a chance to immerse yourself in history, enjoy a short walk in the fresh air, and top it off with a scrumptious pub lunch, look no further than Tarr Steps
Located 23 miles/50-minute drive from Lynton, heading towards Dulverton, Tarr Steps offers a fantastic experience.

In the Dulverton area, you'll find several fascinating historic bridges, but the most famous one is undoubtedly Tarr Steps itself. This medieval marvel is a Grade-1 listed 17-span Clapper Bridge, crafted entirely out of large stone slabs and rocks. Its construction dates back thousands of years, with some speculating that it may have been built as early as 1000 BC.

After exploring the bridge and taking in its intriguing history, make sure to visit the nearby Tarr Inn. Not only is it a delightful place to stop for refreshments or indulge in a cream tea, but you'll also be treated to wonderful views of the picturesque local countryside.

So, whether you're seeking an enjoyable drive, a brush with history, a leisurely walk, or a satisfying meal, Tarr Steps is the perfect destination for you.

Market Flats History

Market flats is based in the centre of Lynton Old Town on Queen Street, (which is the main centre of Lynton historically) situated next to the oldest buildings in town - the Lynton Museum and St.Vincent Guest House.

The property was said to have been built around 1911, on the site of the former “Rats Castle” which was demolished when the road was widened to accommodate motor cars. The new building was called “The Temperance Hotel”, following the Temperance movement at the time. There was a small shop on the ground floor and The Temperance cafĂ© - either side of the front doors. The building also had doors from first floor opening out onto a balcony that wrapped around the building (which was later removed due to the size of vehicles coming through the road).

We are lucky to have found a selection of historical photographs and postcards from the past, showing the development of the building and street over the years.

The building was later renamed Market Flats, due to its location to the Market Hall next door (now the gym), and became the property of North Devon Council who rented the flats out to support lower income families in the town. This was the case until 2018 where the building (albeit left in a state of disrepair) was bought by a private investor (who put a new roof on) and sold the flats off privately.

In 2021 we found ourselves in the fortunate position to be able to purchase the two flats on the top floor, and “Queen Street Lofts” was created. Loft 4 opened in March 2022 and Loft 1 (after a full renovation) was opened in August 2023. Both apartments enjoy the central location in Lynton's Old Town with its bustling cafe’s, restaurants and shops, with rooftop and hill views. A perfect location for visitors to the area.

The future of Market Flats looks bright. The communal hallways are getting a makeover, the front doors are being restored and reglazed, the intercom system will be replaced and also the exterior will get renovated in glossy black and white woodwork to compliment the stonework in true Edwardian style.

LYNMOUTH TO WATERSMEET CIRCULAR WALK

One of the most rewarding circular short walks in the area, is from Lynmouth along the East Lyn river to Watersmeet Lodge (National Trust) and back again. We think this is an essential walking experience when staying in Lynton & Lynmouth. As walks go, it’s one of the easiest and loved by everyone, solo walkers, couples and families alike. It was even mentioned by Julia Bradbury as one of her favourite walks.

Starting in Lynmouth, this walk follows the energetic waters of the East Lyn River all the way to the Watersmeet confluence – the joining of the East Lyn and Hoar Oak waters. It’s quite the spectacle, and a wonderful place to be for a while or two.

Look out for the abundance of nature along the walk, butterflies, birds and fish love this place as much as we do.

On the way to Watersmeet, look out for the site of the old Lynrock Mineral Factory that once sat at the river’s edge. This was sadly washed away in the great flood, but you can still see glimpses of it here and there.

When you’ve finished your time at Watersmeet you can head back the way you came, or take the higher woodland path on the other side of the river. We love this wooded walk through Arnold’s Linhay, and from here you could walk to Countisbury Hill to really extend your day.

From Market Flats, turn right and walk up the hill towards Lee Road where the Valley of Rocks Hotel is, then turn left and take the Cliff Railway which will be on your right, down to Lynmouth. Walk through Lynmouth to Lower Lyndale Car Park, where you will see the East Lyn river. The walk is 3.7 miles (5.9 km), with moderate slopes, and slightly rocky under foot.
