📢 Powys Visitor Levy Survey – have your say

Powys County Council has launched an initial engagement survey to gather views on whether the council should consider introducing a Visitor Levy in Powys in the future.

The council has stressed that it is not proposing to introduce a Visitor Levy at this stage. This initial engagement is an opportunity for residents, tourism and hospitality businesses, other local businesses, visitors and communities to share their views before any further decisions are made.

If Powys were to introduce a Visitor Levy in the future, there would need to be a further formal consultation process. The earliest it could be introduced in Powys would be 2028.

If you run a tourism or hospitality business in Powys, we encourage you to take part and make sure your views are heard!

The survey is open until 30 September 2026.

👉 Find out more and complete the survey here: https://www.haveyoursaypowys.wales/visitor-levy

📩 MWT Cymru members in Powys – an email with more information, including our updated Visitor Levy Support Guide, is winging its way to your inbox!

Why are we asking for your views? We are gathering views from residents, businesses and visitors to help us explore whether Powys should introduce a small overnight visitor levy as set out by the Welsh Government’s “Visitor Accommodation (Register and Levy)”

A quick message to our members and businesses across Mid Wales.

With the extremely dry conditions and several fires affecting communities across Wales at the moment, we just wanted to check in with our members.

If a fire or wildfire is affecting your local area, we hope you, your family, your team and your guests are safe.

We know situations like this can be worrying, particularly when you’re trying to run a business, look after guests and work out what information you should be sharing.

We’re here to help where we can.

We have created a practical Wildfire Support Guide for tourism businesses, covering what to do before, during and after a local wildfire incident. It includes guidance on keeping guests and staff informed, finding and sharing reliable official information, managing smoke and road closures, supporting guests with alternative routes or activities, and communicating clearly on social media. It also includes advice for campsites and outdoor accommodation, fire risk assessments and preparedness, plus practical guidance on cancellations, refunds, booking changes and travel insurance, with ready-to-use guest and social media message templates.

If you would like to be sent the guide, please email [email protected] or pop your email below in the comments.

For now, please take care. If you need us, just get in touch with the MWT team at [email protected]

We’re incredibly excited that the Le Tour de France is coming to Wales in 2027, bringing one of the world’s biggest sporting events through our communities and putting Wales on an international stage.

And there’s an opportunity to be part of it.

Applications are now open to become a JOY Maker, joining the volunteer team helping to welcome the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift to Great Britain.

There are a range of roles available, from supporting race delivery to welcoming spectators, with full training provided and no previous volunteering experience needed.

For communities and tourism businesses across Wales, the Grand Départ is a fantastic opportunity to welcome people, showcase our part of the country and be part of a very special moment for Welsh tourism.

If you’d like to get involved and experience the event from a completely different perspective, take a look at the JOY Maker opportunities.

*Applications close 1 September 2026.

📣 Holiday-let tax rules in Wales are being reviewed

The Welsh Government has announced a review of the local tax rules applying to self-catering holiday accommodation in Wales.

The review will consider the 182-day letting threshold used to determine whether a property qualifies for non-domestic rates rather than council tax. It will also explore reasonable exemptions for certain self-catering properties that would not be suitable for use as permanent private homes.

This is an important opportunity for holiday-let operators, tourism businesses and local communities to share evidence about how the current rules work in practice.

The review aims to find a fair balance: supporting genuine tourism businesses and local employment while protecting housing and the long-term sustainability of Welsh communities.

Responses are invited by 23 October 2026. The existing rules remain in place while the review is undertaken.

Read the announcement and find out how to contribute:
https://www.gov.wales/review-on-holiday-let-tax-rules-to-support-tourism-and-local-communities

Please share this with anyone operating self-catering visitor accommodation in Wales who may wish to contribute their experience.

We had a great day at the Royal Welsh Show on Tuesday, catching up with lots of familiar faces in the Food and Drink Hall and attending Powys County Council's Major Events in Powys 26/27 Reception.

It was inspiring to hear more about the exciting programme of events heading to Powys, including the Le Tour de France, Le Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, the National Eisteddfod of Wales and the 2027 FIM - Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme Six Days Enduro.

These events will bring fantastic opportunities for tourism and hospitality businesses across the region.

If you haven't already, it's well worth signing up to the Visit Wales Industry newsletter to keep up to date with these major events and other industry news. You can also find Visit Wales Industry's new guidance on how tourism & hospitality businesses can prepare for Tour De France here: https://industry.visitwales.com/get-involved/welcoming-cyclists-wales
