Great to see this story appearing in the press already!

"For once, tourism businesses in Mid Wales are enjoying being kept in the dark! That’s because the darkest region in Wales, which has the country’s only International Dark Sky Park, is set to become an astro-tourism destination.

The darkest region title is based on a recent report by Land Use Consultants for NRW, which also revealed that the Cambrian Mountains and the Epynt Mountain were the darkest landscapes."

It’s only Tuesday of Wales Tourism Week… and we’ve already covered some serious ground.

Yesterday, our Chief Executive Zoe Hawkins met with Ashford, Carl and James at Dan-yr-Ogof, The National Showcaves Centre for Wales to raise pressing concerns directly with Powys County Council - especially around the proposed Tourism Levy.

With Pembrokeshire withdrawing their support, we believe the economic case for the levy must now be remodelled. As it stands, rural communities like ours would face the highest cost, with little to gain. We're urging councils and MSs in Mid Wales to reconsider their support before it’s too late. Once legislation is passed, consultation won’t undo the harm.

This morning Zoe attended a Bank of England event to hear economic forecasts, followed by an all-Wales Transport for Wales Trafnidiaeth Cymru session, where we stressed the need for better rural rail services on the Cambrian and Heart of Wales lines. Reliable transport links aren’t just about tourism - they’re vital for our communities and local economies.

We also met with Antur Cymru Enterprise and Aberystwyth University to explore what regeneration should really look like in rural areas.

Tomorrow? The Caravan & Camping Forum for Wales, followed by the Senedd reception – where we’ll continue to represent our members and stand up for our rural visitor economy.

📣 We’re not just watching things happen – we’re at the table, fighting your corner.

🌄 Wales Tourism Week 2025 is here! (12th – 18th May) 🏞️

We're proud to support this vital celebration of our incredible tourism sector - a cornerstone of the Welsh economy, culture, and community.

Our CEO, Zoe Hawkins, will once again be heading to the Senedd as part of the official Wales Tourism Week programme, championing the value of tourism and its impact across Wales. During her visit, she will also be meeting with representatives from the Bank of England to ensure our sector's voice is heard at every level.

🙏 A huge thank you to all our MWT Cymru members for your ongoing support, passion, and dedication to looking after your visitors and guests. Your efforts help make Mid Wales such a fantastic, welcoming destination.
