✈️If you’re planning a trip to the UK (or have family visiting you), this is important 👇

🇬🇧 The UK is introducing a new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme

From 2024 onwards (being rolled out in phases), visitors from certain countries who currently don’t need a visa will now need to apply for an ETA before travelling to the UK.

Here’s what that means in simple terms:

✈️ You must apply online before you travel
📲 It’s linked electronically to your passport
💳 There is a small application fee
⏳ It’s valid for multiple visits over a set period
🚫 You won’t be allowed to board your flight without it

This is similar to the ESTA for the USA, it’s not a visa, but it is mandatory.

If you:
• Have family flying to the UK
• Are booking travel for international clients
• Are travelling via the UK as part of a wider itinerary

Make sure you check whether an ETA is required before confirming plans.

🇮🇹17th February: Carnevale di Viareggio 👺

The Carnevale di Viareggio is one of the most famous and spectacular carnival celebrations in Italy. It takes place every year in the seaside town of Viareggio, in Tuscany, and usually runs from late January to early March, leading up to Lent.

🎨 What makes it special?

The carnival is world-renowned for its huge papier-mâché floats (called “carri allegorici”). These floats are:
• Up to 20 meters tall
• Mechanically animated (they move and sometimes even “speak”)
• Satirical and political

They often portray famous politicians, celebrities, or global issues in an exaggerated, humorous way. The artistry is so advanced that Viareggio is considered one of the world capitals of papier-mâché craftsmanship.

🏛 History

The first parade was held in 1873, when local citizens decided to celebrate Carnival with decorated carriages and masked participants. Over time, the event grew into a large, internationally recognized festival.

Today, the floats are built in the “Cittadella del Carnevale”, a dedicated complex where artists and engineers work all year round to prepare the next edition.

🎉 What happens during the carnival?

The main events are called “Corsi Mascherati” (masked parades), which take place along the seaside promenade of Viareggio. Visitors can expect:
• Massive floats parading along the boulevard
• People in elaborate costumes and masks
• Music, dancing, and confetti everywhere
• A festive, slightly rebellious atmosphere

At night, there are also parties, fireworks, and smaller cultural events.

The official mask of Viareggio is Burlamacco, a colourful clown-like character created in 1930, who has become the symbol of the town’s carnival spirit.

Unlike the elegant masks of Carnival of Venice, the Viareggio carnival is more bold, theatrical, and satirical. It mixes art, engineering, humour, and social commentary, all by the sea.
