🎉 We have some wonderful news to share! 🎉

We’re over the moon to share that The Monastery Manchester has been awarded a transformational grant of £249,650 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. This incredible support comes as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Monastery Trust, and it helps secure the future of our beloved landmark for generations to come.

The funding will support a year-long celebration of everything we’ve achieved together since 1996. Our anniversary events begin this September and will honour the people, stories and community that brought the Monastery back to life.

Importantly, the grant means we can also carry out crucial conservation work and take big steps towards a greener future. Our old boiler system will be replaced with energy-efficient heating, helping us protect this beautiful building and care for it well into the future. 💛

As our CEO Elaine Griffiths shared:
“This investment secures the future of the Monastery and its extraordinary community legacy. It’s a chance to celebrate how far the Trust has come... and to step boldly into a new chapter of heritage, wellbeing and creativity in the heart of Gorton.”

We’re so thankful to all National Lottery players, and to each of you who continues to support the Monastery’s mission 🙏

If we’ve come this far over the last 30 years, just imagine where we could go in the next 30! 🚀

As Manchester prepares to welcome over 1.3m music fans to the city, and the first of the Oasis homecoming shows come to Heaton Park this Friday, Music for the Senses, a city wide art trail featuring 80 artworks, murals, mosaics and installations celebrating Manchester’s music scene has taken over the city to raise money and awareness for grassroots music venues and projects.

Over 300 guitars have been donated by members of the public and well known musicians to create the artworks.
Oasis themselves have joined the cause and donated a guitar, an Epiphone Riviera, signed by Liam and Noel Gallagher, which is on display in Selfridges until it is auctioned off in September along with instruments from Busted, Doves, Elbow, Mani, New Order, Oasis, PINS and Pixies, plus many more.

What happens when a young writer discovers a literary giant for the first time? We spoke with Guruleen Kahlo, one of three writers-in-residence for the new exhibition, "I've Never Read Elizabeth Gaskell."
Guruleen spent the spring exploring Elizabeth Gaskell's world, sitting at the very table where famous novels were written. Her response? A series of new short stories that slice through the history of Manchester's only literary house.
Come and see a fresh perspective on a classic author. "I've Never Read Elizabeth Gaskell" is on at Elizabeth Gaskell's House from this Sunday, 6 July to 9 November.
The project is supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, in partnership with The Writing Squad and Manchester City of Literature.

As part of Music for the Senses, Manchester artist Liam Hopkins, known as Lazerian (Celebration of Polar Bears, Weave) will create an interactive installation for the duration of the trail on King Street called Guitar Street that lovingly repurposes donated guitars.

Lazerian will also be stencilling the faces of some of Manchester’s grassroots music artists onto the back of the forty guitars that will hang in an exhibition along Guitar Street.
