Day 3 Gjirokaster, Albania

After breakfast on day three, we made our way to Gjirokastër, where we took part in a cooking class at Edua Family Restaurant. This was great fun, and afterwards, we sat down together to enjoy the delicious food we had prepared ourselves.

With our stomachs full, we had a little time to explore this enchanting city. Known as the “Stone City,” Gjirokastër is one of Albania’s most captivating destinations, nestled in the country’s mountainous south, where Greek cultural influences can also be seen.

There was plenty to discover, from the charming old bazaar, with its cobbled streets and traditional shops, to the UNESCO-listed Old Town, famous for its distinctive stone-roofed houses. We also had the chance to explore the impressive medieval castle, which offers wonderful views over the surrounding valley. One of its most intriguing features is the secret underground bunker, adding an extra layer of mystery to this already fascinating place.

Although we only had a short time to explore, Gjirokastër left a lasting impression on us. With its rich history, beautiful architecture and unique atmosphere, it was a real highlight of our time in Albania.

Day One Tirana, Albania.

My Albanian adventure began in the vibrant capital, Tirana, just a 20-minute transfer into the city centre. We stayed at the lovely little Hotel La Flororita, within easy walking distance of the main sights.

After a lovely lunch in Rinia Park, we set off to explore on foot. We visited Skanderbeg Square, with its historic landmarks, the impressive Pyramid of Tirana, the fascinating House of Leaves and the beautiful Orthodox Cathedral.

After a quick freshen-up at the hotel, we headed to Tirana Castle for dinner. This charming area is full of little restaurants, traditional pubs and craft shops, blending history with modern-day Albanian life.

✨ First impressions? Tirana is colourful, lively, welcoming and, in my experience, felt very safe to explore. It's a fantastic city for walking around, enjoying good food and soaking up the atmosphere. I'd definitely recommend and do a short break here in the future.

Day Two – Berat, the City of a Thousand Windows ❤️

Day two of our Albanian adventure took us to beautiful Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its stunning Ottoman houses and, of course, its nickname, the City of a Thousand Windows.

After checking into the lovely little Hotel Doar, right in the centre, we headed up to Berat Castle. What a place! Perched high above the Osumi River, it offers incredible views over the city, and it was fascinating to wander around its ancient walls, where people still live today. There are historic churches, mosque ruins and so much history around every corner.

Next stop was Pupa W**ery, where we enjoyed a delicious meze lunch and a w**e tasting. 🍷 Such a lovely experience and a great way to sample some local Albanian hospitality!

We then had the afternoon free to explore Berat at our own pace, soaking up the atmosphere and admiring those beautiful white houses climbing the hillside.

✨ Berat is absolutely charming and definitely a highlight so far. If you're thinking about visiting Albania, this beautiful historic town deserves a place on your list!
