A talk that I'm giving soon on board a cruise ship heading to Morocco, Spain and the Canaries is "The 100 Greatest Songs of the 20th Century".
I've given the talk before. It went down very well , and one guy came up to me in the shape thanking me effusively for including Roy Harper's "Another Day".
It has to be as objective as possible, covering every (Western) genre and honouring all the greats, from music hall to indie, Elvis Presley to Elvis Costello; the Beatles to The Jam, via the Beach Boys, Motown, Procol Harum, reggae, Yes, Zep, U2, the Smiths...
It's songs rather than performances or production triumphs, so no Can ("Moonshake"), Cocteau Twins, the Clash ("White Man"), Black Sabbath ("Planet Caravan").
Every time I think I've finished I realise something serious is missing.
Bowie!
So in went "Space Oddity" and "The Width of A Circle". Then I woke on a cold sweat realising I'd omitted Roxy Music's "A Song for Europe".
Will it ever end?

A very merry Christmas to all our fellow walkers, past, present and future.
Don't forget to read my (Ed Glinert's) epic tome, "Manchester: The Biography" over the hols.
Meanwhile, as Christmas is a time for song, and given the lack of Christmas songs being played in shops, on the streets, at parties and on the radio, here are some reminders, with New Manchester Walks' Top Ten of all time Christmas(sy) records in ascending order.
You can see why we specialise in music walks, not just in Manchester, but in London and Liverpool as well.
Listen up!
10. Slade – "Merry Christmas Everybody" (1973)
9. Paul McCartney – "Wonderful Christmastime" (1979)
8. Elton John – "Step Into Christmas" (1974)
7. Andy Williams – "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" (1963)
6. Kurtis Blow – "Christmas Rappin'" (1979)
5. The Pretenders – "2000 Miles" (1984)
4. Jethro Tull – "Ring Out, Solstice Bells" (1977)
3. Pogues & Kirsty MacColl – "Fairytale of New York" (1988)
2. Elvis Presley – "Blue Christmas" (1987)
1. Greg Lake – "I Believe in Father Christmas" (1975)

This is the Fondaco dei Turchi - the Turks' warehouse - on the Grand Canal, Venice. It's now a museum, but which well-known Manchester building does it remind you of?
More fascinating revelations like this on Ed Glinert's next Manchester Architecture at Night" tour.
Thu 2 Oct, 6.30pm, from outside the Midland Hotel.

This Wednesday or next I'm on the Craig Charles show on 6 Music talking about New Manchester Walks, why it's about time we used accurate history in promoting Manchester, and my new book, "Manchester: The Biography". Sorted! (Ed Glinert)
