A weekend well spent in Merthyr Tydfil starts with understanding the place.

This self-guided walk follows how the town grew, shaped by people, industry and change.

Start in Penderyn Square, where the red flag was raised during the Merthyr Rising. From there, make your way through the town centre to St Tydfil’s Church, the place that gives the town its name.

Then follow the signs to pick up the Taff Trail, passing the remains of the ironworks and heading out towards Cefn Coed Viaduct. Continue down through the village and on to Cyfarthfa.

At the end, you’ll find the park and castle, along with space to pause, take in the landscape and spend a bit of time.

It’s not a single attraction. It’s a route through the story of the town.

Weekend Well Spent in Merthyr Tydfil – Pontsarn & Gorge Walk 🌿

Begin at Pontsarn, where the Taff Trail follows the old railway line across the majestic viaduct, great stone arches carrying you high above the valley, with the ancient Morlais Castle watching from the ridge 🏰

Or, from the Blue Pool at Glas Bridge, take the gorge path via the car park. It winds through cool, dappled light, over carved rock, where small waterfalls gather in quiet pockets beneath the trees 🌊🌿

Listen for the whistle of the steam train, bouncing down the valley. Ahhhh! 🚂

Then later, into Gethin Woods to BikePark Wales, where trails cut through dense forest, tyres rushing over sculpted runs, light flickering through the canopy 🚵‍♂️

Finish with good food at local inns or head into town for everything from Turkish and Greek to Portuguese, or classic fish and chips 🍽️
