Is it too early to talk about Christmas?

Ok. So August is too early to tell you we are already getting bookings for our Dickens at Christmas walk?

So we will wait to talk about how you can join us in December and get into the spirit of Christmas, stepping back to take a look at London as Charles Dickens would have seen it 150 years ago. J

We wont ask you to join us as we visit the places that featured in Dickens’ life and work and inspired him to create characters as dark, as joyous and as complex as Scrooge, Jacob Marley, the Cratchit family.

The next time you're sweltering on the Central Line, spare a thought for Londoners in the summer of 1858! 🌡️

That year, weeks of relentless heat sank the Thames lower than normal, leaving raw sewage baking on the riverbanks.

The result was the Great Stink - a smell so bad that people reportedly vomited near the river, MPs in Parliament soaked their curtains in chloride of lime to try to block it out, and anyone who could afford to fled the city.

The stink did what decades of warnings couldn't: Parliament rushed through funding for a new sewer system in just 18 days. Engineer Joseph Bazalgette built the network of brick tunnels that still forms the backbone of London's sewers today.

I know I know I know- I use this photo a lot!

But i just love the way that the City of London makes me feel.

The glorious modern buildings, all sleek and sexy, nestled in with centuries of history.

I love finding out about London. I can go on a walk with one of our guides and learn something new every single time.

7 Satues Series- number 4

The Cordwainer.

Not a word we hear very often anymore. A cordwainer is a shoe maker/leather worker and this statue by Alma Boyes was created in 2002 to commemorate 100 years of the ward of Cordwainer Club.

It can be found in Watling Street in the ward of Cordwainer, which in medieval times was the centre of shoe-making in the City of London. Leather from Cordoba in Spain was used which gave rise to the name of the craftsmen and the Ward.

The City and County of London Troops War Memorial was unveiled in 1920 to honour London soldiers who served in World War I.

Located in front of the iconic Royal Exchange, this beautiful memorial was designed by Sir Aston Webb and features bronze soldier statues created by Alfred Drury.
Look closely and you’ll spot the bronze lion at the top, proudly holding a shield depicting St George and the Dragon. 🦁
