Bean goose spotted at Montrose Basin Wildlife Reserve and Visitor Centre .

Do you know your bean geese from your pink-footed geese? 🪿🪿🪿

There's been one tundra bean goose spotted with the pink-footed geese frequenting fields around the Basin this week. Instead of pink feet and beaks, they have orange feet and orange beaks!

Tundra bean geese migrate to tundra in Russia to breed. The pink-footed geese will be migrating to Iceland, so this bean goose will need to make sure it pays close attention to its migratory route.

We were so excited to spot a beautiful red squirrel 🐿️ in the garden last week! To make our furry visitor feel at home, we’ve just put up our very first squirrel feeder box.

These little boxes are a great way to support red squirrels – they give them easy access to food, especially during times when natural supplies are low. The design also helps keep larger birds and grey squirrels out, meaning our red friends get the extra boost they need. 🌰🌿

We’re really looking forward to seeing if our new guest returns – and hopefully brings some friends along with them.

Trivia Tuesday: Montreathmont Forest is an extensive, mainly coniferous woodland three miles south of Brechin. It’s a beautiful location for walks in the Angus countryside. The forest is home to a host of wildlife, including buzzards, owls, woodcock, cuckoos, red squirrels, pine marten and deer.

Montreathmont has a unique but now hidden history. It was the location of the Montreathmont Camp Radio Station in World War II and used as Airship Station in WW1. The listening and radio station began as a secret listening post and codebreaking centre which operated as an outstation of Bletchley Park during World War II. It continued to monitor communications during the Cold War.
