The Northern Belle is a garden in motion. You take your seat, a glass of something cold is poured, and the finest summer in Britain begins to slide past your picture window, course by course.
Here are five, of many, to choose from.
The great gardens: the rose borders at Chatsworth, the terraces at Bodnant. The race days and flower shows: the wildflower chalk above Goodwood, and the first RHS show ever held at Sandringham. The historic cities in full leaf: Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh, the Georgian crescents of Bath. The coast in flower: the palms along the Torquay front, the harbour at Oban. And the high fells under steam, on the Settle and Carlisle, the line Channel 5 filmed for its views alone.
Wherever you choose to go, the day aboard is the same. A sparkling welcome, a three-course brunch on the way out, the afternoon free at your destination, and a British seasonal dinner on the way home, with the Sommelier's wines and strolling musicians the length of the train. The view does something a view is not supposed to do. It changes county between courses.
The flowers are already deciding which week will be their best. You have only to decide which Britain you would most like to watch them in.
Sow one now. It flowers on the day.
