🇨🇾🫏 Another wonderful day exploring the hidden treasures of Northern Cyprus! 🫏🇨🇾

I’m having such an amazing time discovering this beautiful and unspoilt part of the island. Today we travelled to the far eastern tip of the Karpaz Peninsula, often known as the “Panhandle” of Northern Cyprus.

Our first stop was the historic Apostolos Andreas Monastery, one of the most important pilgrimage sites on the island. Set against a backdrop of rugged coastline and sparkling Mediterranean waters, it’s a peaceful and fascinating place steeped in history and tradition.

Of course, no visit to the Karpaz would be complete without meeting the famous wild donkeys! 🫏 These friendly residents roam freely across the peninsula and are one of Northern Cyprus’ most loved attractions. Seeing them wandering along the roadside and enjoying the stunning coastal scenery was a real highlight of the day.

The landscapes here are simply breathtaking – rolling hills, golden beaches, crystal-clear seas and hardly another soul in sight. It’s a side of Cyprus many people never get to experience.

If you’re looking for somewhere rich in history, culture and natural beauty, Northern Cyprus is definitely worth considering. ❤️

🌙🇨🇾 This evening we headed into the beautiful Kyrenia Harbour, one of Northern Cyprus’ most picturesque and vibrant spots.

With its backdrop of mountains, historic waterfront and colourful fishing boats bobbing in the harbour, it’s easy to see why so many visitors fall in love with this charming town. ⚓️

The harbour comes alive after sunset, with a wonderful atmosphere, plenty of waterfront bars and restaurants, and locals and visitors enjoying a relaxed Mediterranean evening. 🍹🍽️

One of my favourite things to do when travelling is simply sit and watch the world go by, and Kyrenia is the perfect place for it. From fishermen returning with their catch to families enjoying an evening stroll along the waterfront, there’s always something happening.

After a busy few days exploring the history and culture of Northern Cyprus, it was lovely to slow the pace a little and soak up the atmosphere of this beautiful harbour town.

🇨🇾✨ Another Fascinating Day Exploring Northern Cyprus ✨🇨🇾

Today has been all about history, culture and discovering more of the hidden treasures that make Northern Cyprus such a fascinating destination.

Our first stop was the historic St Barnabas Monastery, one of the island’s most important religious sites. We visited the Icon Museum, home to a collection of beautiful religious artefacts and icons, before seeing the traditional tomb believed to be the resting place of St Barnabas, the patron saint of Cyprus.

We then travelled to the nearby ancient city of Salamis, one of the most important archaeological sites in Cyprus. Walking among the ruins really brings the island’s rich history to life. One of the highlights was the remarkably well-preserved Roman amphitheatre, where you can still imagine the performances and events that entertained thousands of spectators nearly 2,000 years ago. The scale of the site is incredible, with Roman baths, columns and mosaics offering a fascinating glimpse into life during the Roman period.

Next, we visited the stunning Salamis Bay Conti Hotel, a five-star beachfront property used by Newmarket Holidays on their popular Christmas and New Year tours. We enjoyed a site inspection and lunch while taking in the impressive facilities. From spacious modern rooms and multiple swimming pools to excellent dining options, a spa and beautiful Mediterranean views, it’s easy to see why this hotel is such a popular choice for festive winter sunshine.

After lunch, we headed to Famagusta, a city steeped in history and contrasts. We visited the famous abandoned district of Varosha, once one of the Mediterranean’s most glamorous holiday resorts before being left frozen in time for decades. Seeing the empty hotels and deserted streets is both fascinating and thought-provoking.

We then explored the magnificent walled city of Famagusta, where centuries of history come alive. Walking through the ancient Venetian walls, discovering historic churches, mosques and narrow streets, and hearing the stories behind the city’s many rulers over the centuries made for a wonderful end to the day. And of course a stop for the obligatory ice-cream at Petek Pastaleneri which has been in business since 1976 - you can see why!

Northern Cyprus continues to surprise me with its incredible blend of ancient history, beautiful scenery and fascinating culture. Every stop has a story to tell.

🇨🇾 A Fascinating Day Exploring Nicosia 🇨🇾

Today we spent the day discovering Nicosia, the world’s last divided capital city, and what an eye-opening experience it has been.

One of the highlights was visiting the stunning Saint Selimiye Camii built as a Gothic cathedral in the 13th century, it was converted into a mosque during Ottoman rule. Standing inside, you can still see the beautiful cathedral architecture alongside the Islamic features that were added later – a remarkable symbol of the island’s rich and complex history.

We then crossed the border from Northern Cyprus into Southern Cyprus, an experience unlike any other. Walking between the two sides of the city really brings home the unique story of Cyprus and how the island’s history continues to shape everyday life today.

Lunch was hosted by the Northern Cyprus Tourist Board giving us the opportunity to learn more about the region, its culture, traditions and the exciting experiences available for visitors.

We also explored the beautiful Büyük Han (The Great Inn), one of the finest examples of Ottoman architecture on the island. Built in 1572, it was originally used as a resting place for travelling merchants and their animals. Today it’s a charming courtyard filled with artisan workshops, cafés and local crafts, making it one of the most atmospheric places we’ve visited so far.

Every day here is revealing another side to Northern Cyprus that many travellers never get to see. The blend of cultures, architecture, history and warm hospitality is genuinely fascinating.

The welcome was warm and friendly, the staff have been incredibly helpful, and the rooms are modern, stylish and comfortable. The pool and bar area is also looking lovely – the perfect place to relax after a day of exploring. 🌴☀️🍹
