The Cooperage, Long Stairs/the Close, Newcastle, J. Signey,1966

The photograph has been taken from the Close and shows the entrance and lower part of the Long Stairs. Buildings remain on the lower part of the stairs but those higher up have been demolished. The Cooperage is to the left.

A very busy quayside Sunday market in 1978. Who remembers going down there in those days? So many changes since then; the quayside has been completely transformed.

A fascinating old photo showing the Swing Bridge open to let a ship through. Lots of activity on a very busy river on both sides and lots of pollution. The date of this postcard is 1926.

Thanks to Chris Boundey for this amazing panoramic view from the top of the construction of the Hadrian Tower. Apart from the Keep and Cathedral and quayside landmarks, look over to the white structure in the distance, which is Sunderland’s Spire bridge. Incredible view.

The 9th of June today-‘Ah went to Blaydon Races, twas on the 9th of June,
Eighteen hundred and sixty two on a summer’s afternoon.’
A painting showing the drunkenness and revelry at this event.

My own photos of the city centre, taken during a lockdown walk in early June 2020.

Up at the 'top end' of Northumberland Street (the Haymarket end, near where Barclays Bank upstairs branch was until recently) was a shop selling radios, hi-fi systems, records and musical instruments. This was Alderson & Brentnall, where I bought my very first album, ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’, for the princely sum of £2 and 10/-! Does anyone else remember it?

Windows in the Central Arcade was its equivalent.
