People will typically have to live in the UK for 10 years before applying for the right to stay indefinitely.

🔑 Summary of Key Immigration Reforms (May 2025 White Paper)
1. Settlement and Citizenship
ILR qualifying period will increase from 5 to 10 years for most migrants.

Settlement and citizenship will depend on a “contribution-based” assessment, considering:

Tax compliance

Employment in skilled sectors

Community involvement

2. Skilled Worker Visa
Minimum job level requirement will be raised to RQF Level 6 (Bachelor's degree level).

Salary thresholds will rise, and the Immigration Salary List will be abolished.

Employers must prove domestic recruitment efforts and investment in UK workforce training.

3. Social Care Visas
Overseas recruitment for care roles will end.

Current care workers already in the UK may extend their visas during a transition period up to 2028.

4. English Language Rules
Stricter English requirements will apply to all visa routes, including for dependants.

5. Employer Obligations
Immigration Skills Charge will rise by 32%, redirected to fund UK training initiatives.

Employers who fail to prioritise local hiring risk losing their sponsorship licence.

6. Enforcement and Oversight
A digital ID system will be introduced to track visa overstayers.

Legal protections under Article 8 ECHR (right to family/private life) will be narrowed to prevent misuse in deportation appeals.
