We’re back from another incredible Making Tracks adventure, and Portugal & The Picos was everything we could have hoped for.

Amazing roads, incredible scenery, great places along the way and, most importantly, another brilliant group of like-minded people enjoying what we all love — road trips and adventure.

A COASTAL FAREWELL & THE JOURNEY HOME 🏁

It’s hard to believe how quickly the time has flown by! What feels like only yesterday we were setting off on the Portugal & The Picos adventure, and now we’ve reached the final day.

The farewell drive took us onto the legendary AS-260, famous for the annual Subida al Fito hillclimb, before heading to Mirador del Fito for spectacular 360-degree views across the Picos de Europa and the Bay of Biscay.

We also had the chance to visit the Alonso Museum, adding another highlight to an already incredible adventure! 🏎️🏁

And just like that, the adventure comes to an end and the journey home begins. 🇪🇸🇵🇹🏁

What an incredible trip it’s been!

LAKES, THE PICOS & TWISTY GORGE ROADS

A fast morning transit across the Castilian plains brought us to the spectacular, glassy reservoir of Riaño.

From there, we headed into the dramatic, claustrophobic Desfiladero de los Beyos, with a waterfall-side lunch stop along the way.

The day finished with an evening in the Asturian capital of Oviedo.

Another memorable day as the Portugal & The Picos adventure gets closer to the finish line!

PORTUGAL’S ROUTE 66 & THE SPANISH FRONTIER 🇵🇹🇪🇸🏁

A day of legendary roads, historic towns and some seriously impressive scenery.

We took on the N103, widely celebrated as Portugal’s ultimate driving road, before stopping for some awe-inspiring photos from the immense concrete wall of the Pisões Dam.

After a relaxed lunch and some time exploring the 2,000-year-old Roman bridge in the riverside city of Chaves, we headed for a premium hotel terrace with perfectly framed views of the medieval Castelo de Bragança.

From there, we crossed the wild, untamed border into Spain and settled into a magnificent Castilian Parador.

A DAY TO SLOW DOWN & EXPLORE BRAGA 🇵🇹🏁

Making Tracks trips are about more than just driving. It’s about finding the perfect balance between incredible roads, exploring new places and having time to relax along the way.

After a demanding driving schedule, this day was all about taking things at a slower pace and enjoying the historic city of Braga.

The 5-star Meliá Braga Hotel & Spa provided the perfect place to recharge our batteries, relax and get ready for the final legs of the Portugal & The Picos adventure.

Because the best road trips aren't just about how far you drive — they're about everything you experience along the way.

MAGIC MOUNTAINS TO THE HISTORIC NORTH 🇵🇹

A flowing drive to the Roman thermal springs of Termas de São Pedro do Sul, followed by the winding roads of the Serra da Freita and the dramatic Frecha da Mizarela waterfall.

After a generous lunch stop in Arouca, we headed alongside the Douro River on the N108 before making our way into historic Braga.

And, most importantly… Deeno has even made a new friend! 🤝

MOUNTAIN ROADS & STORMY SKIES

The route took us across the Beira Alta plains, with a coffee stop beneath the 13th-century walls of Belmonte Castle before tackling the thrilling hairpins of the N-232.

We also stopped to photograph the mirror-like waters of the high-altitude mountain dams before heading to the highest drivable point in continental Portugal for a spectacular mountaintop lunch.

The descent through the awe-inspiring Zêzere Glacial Valley was next, before we arrived at our luxurious spa retreat in the Dão w**e region.

With stormy weather rolling in, we decided to slow things down and make the most of the Puro Dão Hotel & Spa. Our tour mascot, Deeno, certainly seemed happy with that decision, enjoying the hotel, spa and a few cocktails!

Sometimes the best part of a road trip is knowing when to put your feet up and enjoy the surroundings.

THE VALLEY DESCENT AND THE HIGH PLATEAU

The morning started with a brisk run across the high-altitude plateau before the route opened up onto the sweeping vineyard curves of the N322.

We then turned south onto the historic N2, winding through the northern terraces before taking on a spectacular, twisting descent directly into Peso da Régua.

From high-altitude roads to vineyard-lined bends and the final descent into Peso da Régua, this was a day all about the driving. 🇵🇹🏁

DAY 5 – PORTUGAL & THE PICOS 🇵🇹🏁

A highly technical morning descent into the Cachão da Valeira gorge.

From there, we marvelled at the massive engineering of the Barragem da Régua lock gates, before heading onto the world-famous N222 and driving eastbound to Pinhão.

Another brilliant day on the road through Portugal! 🏁🇵🇹

A morning coffee beneath the medieval ruins of Mogadouro Castle.

From there, we continued south through the twisting frontier roads of Freixo de Espada à Cinta before taking on the legendary descent down the N221 to Barca d'Alva.
