šŸ•¶ļø Incognito

Say hello to Big Mac - a laid-back bull elephant who frequently visits Kanga Pan — the only permanent water source in a 12-mile radius.

During the dry season (especially July to October) you can simply sit on the deck at camp and watch a whole world of wildlife pass by.

A stay inland here contrasts beautifully with further nights down on the Mana Pools riverside.

Big Mac is very relaxed - he’s even been known to take a slurp from the plunge pool.

With just six solar-powered tents and wonderful outdoor showers, Kanga Expeditions offers a true armchair safari experience.

🦁 Green Season Cubs

Late May into June is a wonderful time to be in the Masai Mara’s private conservancies. The landscape is at its most beautiful—lush, green, and alive after the long rains. With dramatic skies, fewer visitors, and lower rates, you can enjoy some very special sightings.

These tiny lion cubs, just 10 days old, were being carefully monitored by the Mara Lion Project—and I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse! Mum was very relaxed, stretched out in the sun, not too far away...

Think you know Okuti?

Freshly refurbished for 2024, Okuti delivers a classic Botswana safari experience in one of Southern Africa’s most iconic wildlife areas.

Here’s how it stacks up:

šŸ“ Inside the Moremi Game Reserve
Superb wildlife viewing—especially for predators—but note: no off-roading or night drives, and higher traffic in peak months compared to private concessions.

🚤 Land & Water Activities
Thanks to its spot near the Xakanaxa Lagoon, you can enjoy both traditional 4x4 game drives and boat trips through the Okavango channels.

šŸ•ļø Small & Personal
Just 7 reed chalets (including 2 family units) make Okuti feel intimate, despite its location in the popular Mopane Tongue region.

šŸ’ø Excellent Value
Botswana is known for its high-end, low-impact tourism model—Okuti offers good value, especially with its recent upgrades and prime location.

šŸ”— Pairs Perfectly with Kanana
Sister camp Kanana, in a private concession, is the perfect follow-on: exclusive wilderness, walking safaris, and mokoro rides await.

Serengeti: Endless Plains, Hidden Drama

The name Serengeti comes from the Maasai word Siringet, meaning "the place where the land runs on forever"—and from this view, it’s easy to see why šŸ‘€

We’d paused for a picnic breakfast, surrounded by a zebra herd on the open plains, when our guide—ever alert—spotted the subtle twitch of lioness ears through his binoculars.

Packing up the picnic, we moved slowly in their direction to be treated to a wonderfully relaxed sighting with no other vehicles, as the girls eyed up some breakfast of their own.

New: Onguma Trails Camp, Namibia

Now open on the edge of Etosha National Park, Onguma Trails Camp is a low-impact, solar-powered glamp-camp offering 2- or 3-night walking safaris through the private Onguma Nature Reserve.

With just four canvas tents, wood-fired hot tubs, and an open-air mess tent, the camp runs entirely off-grid and embraces sustainable design—constructed using natural materials and using eco-friendly practices to minimise environmental impact.

Set departures run every five days during the winter season (April to September), making this a rare opportunity to experience Namibia on foot, guided by experts across big game terrain. Guests should be able to comfortably walk up to 10km.

Even the lily pads are on holiday in Mauritius… šŸŒæā˜€ļø

These spectacular Victoria amazonica giant lilies are native to the Amazon Basin, but have been on display at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden (popularly known as Pamplemousses)—one of the oldest botanical gardens in the Southern Hemisphere—for the best part of a century.

The flowers are fleeting: they open white on the first night, then blush pink on the second ā˜ŗļøā€”after being pollinated by a beetle.

Climate change and habitat loss threaten these giants of the floral world. Botanical gardens like Pamplemousses play a vital role in conservation—preserving biodiversity and sharing the stories behind it.

Spring-loaded leopard cub šŸ‘€šŸ†

This little one is full of beans! Mumma... slightly less so.

Leopards are the most elusive of Africa’s big cats. Solitary by nature, mothers raise their cubs alone, keeping them hidden for the first few weeks. Cubs will stay with their mother for up to two years, honing their hunting and survival skills.

A magical sighting in the Musiara Marsh area of the Masai Mara.

šŸŒ™ By the River

Welcome to Ngare Serian, where the wild comes to your doorstep.
ā€˜Ngare’ means by the river in the Maasai language.

At night, the fire flickers. The Mara River gurgles and rushes below.
Hippos grunt in the dark, and the distant roar of lions carries through the night.

Cross a narrow rope bridge to reach this intimate camp, with just four spacious tents overlooking the river, and views to the Oloololo Escarpment beyond.
Leave WiFi behind, and embrace nature.

Set within the private Mara North Conservancy, home to just 11 member camps, this is safari at its most immersive.

Guests enjoy exclusive use of a 4WD safari vehicle, along with a dedicated guide and spotter for the duration of their stay—and can also walk, fly-camp, or spend a night under the stars in the magical 'Nest' treehouse.

Remote. Peaceful. Wild.

šŸŒ Into the Wild

This is nature. A reminder of the balance that must be protected.
Predator and prey, survival and sacrifice—each part of the great web of life.

This photo was taken during a journey from Sabi Sand Game Reserve to Mozambique. We entered the National Park via Paul Kruger Gate and exited at Malelane Gate in the south. We were self-driving, like most people we saw.
It was a completely different experience to the one we had in Sabi Sands.

What you can’t see in this photo is the 20 vehicles lined up at the roadside, all jostling for a glimpse of the action.

These are questions anyone going on safari should be asking:
At what point does wildlife tourism become unsustainable?
And what matters more—access, or preservation?

We believe in high-quality, low-density experiences. We support private conservancies where visitor numbers are limited, guiding is responsible, and wildlife and communities benefit.

But it’s not perfect—because often, these experiences are only accessible to the privileged few. Meanwhile, national parks rely on visitor fees to protect land for wildlife.

There are no easy answers. But asking the questions is a start.
It all comes back to balance.

🐘 Throwback to a very special moment in Kenya...

Back in 2018, I met with Angela Sheldrick and Peter Mbulu at the incredible , and was lucky enough to spend time with the elephant orphans too.

This is little Maktao.
(For the record, I wasn’t the one initiating contact here—Maktao came over for a cuddle as I was kneeling down to take a photo.)

Maktao is now 8 and continuing his journey back to the wild, living at the Umani Springs Reintegration Unit.

SWT does vital work rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned elephants across Kenya, and we’re proud that supported them with a $25,000 donation in 2017 for their 40th anniversary.

You can visit SWT as part of a safari in Kenya, along with the wonderful sanctuary further north. These behind-the-scenes experiences help support conservation and community initiatives on the ground—while deepening our understanding of the challenges faced.

Spangled.

Big weekend? Or just too much breakfast? 🦁🌳

Lions aren’t usually known for tree-climbing, but in parts of East Africa, including the Serengeti, it’s not unheard of—especially after a big meal.

A nice breeze, fewer flies, and a good vantage point? This young lion is clearly onto something.
