This little bird, a Yellow Chat, is one of the key target species for bird watchers visiting the Broome region of Western Australia. Found in select habitats across the north, north west and central Australia, this rare chat can be hard to spot. The plant it is sitting on is samphire - the chats feed on the spiders that make this plant their home.

On our Yellow Chat Twitch with the our guide told me not to expect photos of this species, as the birds are usually seen from about 100m or more away and never stay still. Well I guess this chat didn't get the memo as it landed about 10m from our car and stayed for about 2 - 3 minutes. To take this image I needed to contort myself to shoot from the front passenger seat through the back seat window on the driver's side of a Toyota 4WD - with a 400mm prime lens which is not small, but I think the result was worth the effort.

Researchers think songbirds and waders may seek very cold temperatures at high altitudes to counteract the heat caused by solar radiation.
