What an amazing weekend at the Global Bird Fair at Rutland Water last weekend, and even the weather was kind to us this year ☀️

We loved chatting to people about the wonderful birding opportunities in The Gambia

Many thanks to The Gambia Tourism Board and Gambia Experience

My favourite bit was chatting and catching up with our clients who visited us on the stand

Gambia is an ideal winter destination as the season runs from November to March. The weather is fantastic as well as the hotels, food and of course the people.

The gardens around compounds (where families live) and hotels in The Gambia can be a magnet for birds and wildlife, especially where there are certain flowers, fruiting trees and of course water.

Generally, they are fairly approachable for photo and video opportunities.

So, we've touched on many reasons to visit The Gambia.

In addition to birdwatching you'll also be sure to get a real cultural experience. Visitors to The Gambia can immerse themselves in the country's vibrant culture, explore bustling markets, enjoy traditional music and dance performances, and above all, savour delicious Gambian cuisine.

If you've been following the page, you'll have been reading about some of the great reasons to come and visit The Gambia. Well, we aren't done yet :-)

The Gambia is part of a major migratory route for birds moving between Europe and Africa. During October you can witness the arrival of many migratory birds, some which will spend the next 4/5 months in The Gambia. Similarly, at the end of the traditional main tourist season, in February/March you'll see birds returning to their breeding grounds within Europe.

Many birdwatching sites in The Gambia are managed in partnership with local communities, which helps to promote conservation efforts while also providing economic benefits to locals.

Here at Finfoot Birding Adventures we are supporting sustainable tourism initiatives and contributing to the preservation of habitats and species.

Plenty of birds, great habitat, easy to get around and a great introduction to African birding. These are just some of the reasons to visit The Gambia, also known as The Smiling Coast of Africa due to its friendly and smiling people.

To maximise your experience and get the most from your trip, you need to take advantage of a resident expert with years of experience of not only the birds, but also the habitats, where to find hard to find species and valuable insights into the local avian ecology.

Here at Finfoot Birding Adventures we can give you the best experience, no matter what your needs. Organised tours to maximise the number of species seen, day trips, custom trips to meet your requirement or photography specials.

We’ve talked about the diversity and number of species The Gambia offers, how it’s a fantastic introduction to African birdlife/wildlife and how, because of it’s relatively small size it is easy to access multiple sites within a short distance.

Another great reason to visit this amazing country is the abundance of habitats. Despite its small size, The Gambia offers diverse habitats including mangroves, savannahs, wetlands, and forests. Each habitat supports different bird species, providing birdwatchers with a range of environments to explore.

Even some of the lodges and hotels have fantastic gardens which can be a haven for wildlife.

Feeding Time Again

Wow what an amazing sight watching the Black Kites swooping down with such accuracy they were catching the meat mid air.

Great photo opportunity

Yesterday, we spoke about how rich the birding is here in The Gambia, boasting over 600 species and how it's a great introduction to African birding for those who have never been to Africa.

Another great reason to visit is for how accessible the birding sites are. The Gambia is relatively small in size, making it easy to access multiple birding sites within a short distance. This means you can maximise birdwatching opportunities without spending too much time traveling between locations.

As an example of how rich and diverse the birding can be, this morning we covered no more than 3 miles walking/canoe ride over a period of just under 4 hours and gathered 85 species. See the the list by clicking on the link below:

Feeding Time of Hooded Vultures

At 11am each morning one of the local birdwatchers feed the Hooded Vultures which has been a long standing tradition at the Senegambia Hotel for many years

Sadly, the Hooded Vulture is in decline but with a little help and support they doing well here

Getting in on the act were the Black Kites swooping down to catch the food

Great photo opportunity 📸
