The Fell Race

The boys have popped down to Jura recently. They have been helping the Jura passenger ferry with extra capacity. There was a huge number of runners that gather for this Fell Race on Jura. The weather was ideal for the crossing and the race. Photo was taken from the NLV Pole Star.

Treshnish Corncrake

Cameron was very fortunate to spot a corncrake on Lunga. Very elusive birds, so many times you just hear the call and seldom do you see them. Fortunately this one was darting about the blue bells and managed to get a snap. Incredible to think they travel up from sub-Sahara Africa.

Bagging

Over the weekend the boys were kept busy stopping off at wee islands. The guests were ‘Island Bagging’ and some of them are easier to get to than others. There is a wide variety from the white sand beaches to shear rock islands. The weather and swell plays a big part too. 12 islands successfully landed and bagged over the 2 days.

Eigg

Last week Struan had an overnight trip to the isle of Eigg. It was a gentleman’s weekend from a neighbouring island of Coll. The weather was ideal and worked in their favour. Struan managed a morning wander to the top of An Sgurr of Eigg. A point recognisable from many miles away.

The Big Lift

A wee while ago a work boat sank on her mooring in Oban bay. She some how landed on the seabed bolt upright. As you can imagine this was a hazard to navigation and the environmental issues that come with it. The big guns from Liverpool were called in. The Lara 1 arrived and managed to lift the vessel ‘Headcorn’ onto her deck. Not the biggest lift she has done but still a tricky one to under take.

Late Coll

There has been a couple of late runs out to the islands recently. One of them was a utilities company to resolve an issue. Once on scene they soon rectified the problem. For once it was a cracker of a night and smooth steam home to Loch Feochan.

Treshnish

Cameron was back out to the Treshnish isles last week. The weather could not have been better for it. Smooth seas and wall to wall sunshine. The birdlife didn’t disappoint. The puffins, razorbills, shags and fulmars all in strong numbers. Harp rock a wee bit quiet for guillemots but numbers will build shortly. Kittiwakes also spotted in the usual locations. The team are looking forward to getting back out there soon.

All Set

That’s all the boats polished, serviced and on the water now. Last one in was the old girl ‘Power of Scotland’, still going strong and earning her keep. The early Easter has made it interesting as the weather was poor, but the complete opposite now. Calm seas, sun and blue skies.

Passing Islay

The weather has still been testing at times but managed to venture up to Tobermory. After a drop off in Loch Sunart Cameron headed back for Oban. On the way he spotted the newest ferry of the Calmac fleet, The ‘Isle of Islay’. She was powering up the sound. Due to some reshuffling of the ferries she was heading to Barra. Soon to be on her usual route servicing the whisky isle.
