📸 Kilchurn Castle is one of the most photographed castles in Scotland, and you can see why! It was once the powerbase of the Campbells of Glenorchy. Perched on the edge of Loch Awe, it’s in a top beauty spot today. (📷 Kyle Stewart )
🌊 Iona Abbey has been described as the birthplace of Christianity in Scotland. St Columba and 12 companions came here from Ireland in AD 563. The monastery they founded was one of the most important and influential in the British Isles.
🏰 Castle Sween is thought to be the oldest castle on the Scottish mainland. Architectural details show it was built in the 1100s. At this time, the land the castle was built on would have been outside of the Kingdom of Scotland. Control of Argyll and the Isles was in dispute between the King of Norway and the King of Scots.
⚔️ Another of Scotland’s oldest stone castles, Dunstaffnage, welcomed one of its more famous guests, Flora MacDonald, in 1746. Flora helped Bonnie Prince Charlie flee to Skye from the Redcoats, dressing him up as her serving girl ‘Betty Burke’. The prince made his escape but Flora was arrested and brought to Dunstaffnage.
