🌿 Iona: a small island with a remarkable story 🌿

Just off the west coast of Scotland, Iona may be only around 3–4 miles long and home to roughly 120 permanent residents, but its influence reaches far beyond its shores. Often described as a place of peace and tranquillity, the island has been an important spiritual centre for over 1,400 years.

Iona is best known as the cradle of Christianity in Scotland. St Columba arrived here in AD 563 and founded a monastery that went on to shape religious life across Scotland and beyond. The island later became the burial place of many early Scottish, Irish and Norse kings, giving it lasting historical significance.

Despite its modest size, Iona offers striking variety: white sandy beaches, fertile machair grassland, and gentle hills such as Dun I, the island’s highest point, rising just over 300 feet above sea level. On clear days, views stretch across the Inner Hebrides and out towards distant islands.

Today, Iona continues to be known for its calm atmosphere, rich heritage, and beautifully preserved landmarks, including the restored Iona Abbey and the remains of a medieval nunnery—quiet reminders of an island that has played an outsized role in Scotland’s story.
