9 October 1690: In the midst of a violent storm, John Stewart of Ardsheal, Tutor of Appin, arrived at Dunollie Castle to surrender Castle Stalker to Archibald Campbell, Earl of Argyll. Under the terms drawn up, Ardsheal was to surrender the castle, cannons and birlinns, and was to join with Argyll in reducing the inhabitants of Glencoe to submit to the Scottish government. Argyll was at Dunollie with his forces in preparation for crossing over to the Isle of Mull to subdue the Macleans of Duart. Later that day, as the storm worsened, the Royal Navy frigate HMS Dartmouth, commanded by Captain Edward Pottinger, was driven onto rocks and sunk in the Sound of Mull. Dartmouth had been summoned into Scottish waters by the Scottish government for anti-Jacobite operations.
