I had the absolute pleasure of staying in the Shepherd's Hut for 3 nights, and it was nothing short of amazing. From the moment I arrived, I was captivated by the peaceful surroundings and the charming Shepherds hut, which was beautifully designed and thoughtfully equipped with everything I could possibly need. The icing on the cake was a fresh home made loaf of bread on my arrival, and with plenty of Westcountry butter to boot! Delicious! It is obvious they take great pride in baking bread for their visitors, and I am reliably informed by Linda that they are working on a new sourdough recipe. (Best of luck, I can never get it right!) There was also apple juice, milk for tea/coffee, and even some fresh flowers which made me feel very welcome and right at home.
One of the most memorable moments of my stay was waking up early to watch the sunrise by the river with my 2 dogs. According to Linda, it is a very rare encounter if you manage to spot an otter so I feel extra privileged to have seen one in the early hours after sunrise – it was so cute!
The tranquility of the location, paired with the sights and sounds of nature, made it a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Loads and loads of birds frequented the many bird feeders, as well as squirrels and owls hooting at night. There is a bird feeder stuck directly on to the window next to the bed, the PERFECT spot to sit and read a book whilst the birds peck at their food just inches away.
There is a fenced area around the hut, so I was at ease knowing my dogs couldn't stray too far. Unfortunately I didn't make time to use the bbq or the fire pit, but next time I visit I definitely will! The walks along the river were really lovely, and both the dogs and I were cream crackered after a day of exploring.
The hosts were incredibly welcoming and also provided excellent recommendations for local walks and nearby shops/attractions in a huge A4 folder of useful information. The attention to detail throughout the hut, from the cozy electric heater (which really did the job) to the comfortable bed, made my stay both relaxing and enjoyable.
If you're looking for a serene retreat in the heart of Devon, the Shepherds Hut is an absolute gem, and well worth a visit. To quote Arnie - I'll be back!
