BEEKEEPING EXPERIENCE, nr AVIEMORE
🔷️
Beekeeping certainly wasn't on my family travel bingo card for 2025, but if you fancy something totally different then it's handy to know that bees somehow totally fascinate children. I've left the sound on the videos so you can hear the million questions our family asked, and the patient explanations from our host Tamasina at The Rowan Tree Country Hotel And Restaurant
🍯
After getting into our beekeeping kit (which did look ridiculous on us, but the grey suits are surprisingly elegant 😁) we headed for the apiary. Each hive holds approx 60,000 bees, but we felt v protected in our suits, and Tamasina is a very calming presence.
🍯
We even saw a baby bee being born, eating its way out of its nursery cell (video shows the exact moment - we named the baby Josephine🥰).
🍯
After spending time at the hives, return to the hotel for a honey tasting session, comparing supermarket, Heather and Blossom honey 🍯. Finished off with a cup of tea and dessert. We learned SO much about bees, and the boys were completely engaged from start to finish. Contact Tamasina at the hotel to find out more.

We visited the hotel from our camping base at Dalraddy Holiday Park

THE FERRYMAN'S INN, TAYMOUTH MARINA
🔷️
A lochside restaurant dishing up seafood, meat from nearby Rockwell Farm and stone baked pizzas. A beautiful spot for lunch, just down the road from Kenmore, vistas over Loch Tay, and walk off any overindulgence to the nearby Acharn Falls after dining.

The restaurant is part of Taymouth Marina that offers quality accommodation, a spa, floating saunas and a slide directly into the Loch. V popular spot for civilised hen dos. As you can imagine, I'm super sad I didn't have the chance to hurl myself down the slide 😄🥶 but will have to return to try the spa and sauna etc.

LOCH TAY VIEWPOINT
🔷️
More to come from 24 hours exploring Loch Tay, but starting with a steep but easy and well-signposted walk from Drummond Hill (car park) to Black Rock Viewpoint. Wide paths would accommodate a sturdy buggy too. And what a view from the top.

A quick drive from the Scottish Crannog Centre so make a day of it.

INVISIBLE CITIES WALKING TOUR, ABERDEEN
🔷️
Prince William experienced an Invisible Cities walking tour on his recent visit to Aberdeen.
We headed to Old Aberdeen to meet up with tour guide Angus, who's obviously now used to dealing with Princes and now had to deal with us! He took us around the key sights and sounds of Old Aberdeen, and, even as local, it was a great reminder of how beautiful and interesting this corner of the city is.

Basically, Invisible Cities is a social enterprise and member of the Homewards Aberdeen Coalition that champions the experience of those with lived experience of homelessness by offering four weeks of training to become walking tour guides. The tours offer fresh perspectives to locals and tourists alike while offering guides the foundations needed to thrive, such as social connections, increased confidence, and financial security.

Homewards is a five-year programme created by Prince William and The Royal Foundation of The Prince and Princess of Wales that aims to demonstrate that it is possible to end homelessness- making it rare, brief, and unrepeated. 1.5 hour tour, from £15. Book at invisible-cities.org for all your guests coming to Aberdeen.

THE MARCLIFFE, ABERDEEN
🔷️
Five star dining at the Marcliffe. Local produce, dishes that we simply wanted to eat (we couldn't decide between 4 starters), beautifully presented but not overly fussy, great use of flavour and texture, and exceptional and assured service too.

I always feel I can leave the world behind when I dine here, and, even though I'm quite grown up and spend time looking after other people, I'm the one taken care of at the Marcliffe. Always a joy.

(Children's menu available too, we saw some youngsters enjoying a family celebration.)
