One of Jerusalem's oldest gates has been bricked shut for roughly a thousand years, and it was sealed specifically because of a prophecy people were afraid might come true. This piece of biblical prophecy sits in plain sight in the Old City wall, seen by millions of visitors who often walk right past it.

The Golden Gate, believed to sit on the site of an earlier gate through which tradition says the Messiah will one day enter Jerusalem, was sealed by Muslim rulers in the twelfth century, reportedly to prevent that prophecy from being fulfilled. A cemetery was later placed directly in front of it, based on the belief that a priestly Messiah could not pass through a burial ground without becoming ritually impure.

There's something striking about a physical wall being built specifically around a belief in something that hasn't happened yet. Had you ever noticed the Golden Gate before, or heard the reason behind why it was sealed?
