On this day in musical history 1 June 1967

This day in music history became one of the most important days in rock history. On the very same day that Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles was released and changed popular music forever, a young David Bowie quietly released his self-titled debut album.

While “Sgt. Pepper” exploded into the cultural stratosphere with psychedelic innovation, Bowie’s debut landed with little impact and almost disappeared upon release. Looking back now, it’s incredible to think that one album defined the Summer of Love while the other came from an artist who would eventually reinvent rock music time and time again.

Bowie’s debut album showcased a very different side to the artist the world would later know as Ziggy Stardust. Influenced by music hall, Anthony Newley-style theatrical vocals and whimsical British storytelling, the record included the singles “Rubber Band” and “The Laughing Gnome” the latter becoming a cult curiosity years later thanks to its sped-up vocal effects and quirky humour.

At the time, critics and audiences simply didn’t know what to make of him. The album failed commercially and Deram Records dropped Bowie in April 1968. But failure would prove temporary. Within just a few years Bowie would return transformed, unleashing “Space Oddity”, “Hunky Dory” and eventually the groundbreaking Ziggy Stardust persona that made him a global icon.

It’s one of rock history’s great contrasts: on the day The Beatles released one of the greatest albums ever made, David Bowie released the uncertain first chapter of a career that would later change music forever.

🎸 🚶‍♂️ Want to explore the streets where Bowie, The Beatles and countless legends shaped music history? Join my “Soho Rock ’n’ Roll Tour” through the heart of swinging London from legendary clubs and recording studios to the hidden streets where the soundtrack of the 60s and 70s was born.

On this day in musical history 30th May 1987,

On this day in music history David Bowie launched his spectacular 87 date "Glass Spider" world tour at Feyenoord Stadium in Rotterdam, Holland and rock concerts would never look the same again.

At the time, the production was described as “the largest touring set ever created.” Bowie wasn’t just putting on a concert he was creating futuristic theatre on a gigantic scale.

Dominating the stadium was an enormous spider-shaped stage structure standing 60 feet high and 64 feet wide, complete with massive illuminated legs stretching over the audience. The set contained over 20,000 feet of colour-changing lighting tubing glowing from inside the spider’s limbs, creating a surreal sci-fi atmosphere worthy of Bowie’s imagination. 🕸️⚡

The production was so huge it required 43 trucks to transport a single stage set from city to city an astonishing logistical operation for the time. Audiences were treated to elaborate choreography, dancers, video projections and dramatic costume changes as Bowie performed classics including "Heroes", "Life On Mars", "Modern Love", "China Girl" and "Ziggy Stardust".

The tour followed the massive commercial success of Bowie’s "Never Let Me Down" album and showed his determination to constantly reinvent live performance. Critics were divided at the time some calling it excessive, others hailing it as visionary, but decades later the Glass Spider tour is remembered as one of the boldest and most ambitious spectacles in rock history.

Few artists could combine music, fashion, theatre and pure artistic risk quite like Bowie. He didn’t simply play concerts he created worlds. 🌟

On this day in music history 27 May 1977,

On this day in music history, the S*x Pistols released the most controversial record in British music history “God Save The Queen.”

Arriving during Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee celebrations, the song was a furious attack on the British establishment, the monarchy and the state of the nation. Its snarling lyrics, chaotic energy and anti-authoritarian attitude sent shockwaves through Britain and turned punk rock from an underground movement into a national scandal. 🇬🇧⚡

The backlash was immediate. The BBC banned the song from radio and television, major high street record shops refused to stock it, and even workers at pressing plants reportedly declined to handle copies of the single. Yet the controversy only fuelled demand.

Despite the bans and outrage, “God Save The Queen” sold over 200,000 copies in its first week alone and officially reached No.2 on the UK charts held behind Rod Stewart’s “I Don’t Want To Talk About It.”

To this day, rumours persist that the record was actually the UK’s true No.1, with claims that the music industry establishment deliberately blocked it from the top spot to avoid embarrassment during the Jubilee celebrations. The truth has never been fully confirmed or denied, which only adds to the legend. 👑🔥

Fronted by the sneering, self-destructive charisma of Johnny Rotten and managed by provocateur Malcolm McLaren, the S*x Pistols changed British culture forever. Their music, fashion and attitude exploded out of London’s Kings Road and Soho, inspiring an entire generation of punks, artists and outsiders.

🎸 Want to stand where punk was born? Join my Rock ’n’ Roll Tour through Soho, Denmark Street and London’s legendary music landmarks the clubs, rehearsal rooms and backstreets where the S*x Pistols, Bowie, The Clash, The Rolling Stones and countless others made music history.

On this day in musical history 24th May 1974

On this day in music history David Bowie released the dark, theatrical and dystopian masterpiece "Diamond Dogs" one of the most ambitious albums of his career.

Arriving just after Bowie had shocked fans by “retiring” Ziggy Stardust, Diamond Dogs revealed yet another dramatic reinvention. Gone was the glittering alien rock star in his place came a twisted vision of a post-apocalyptic city filled with decay, rebellion and danger. Inspired partly by George Orwell’s “1984”, the album blended glam rock, soul and theatrical storytelling into a gritty urban nightmare unlike anything Bowie had released before.

Tracks like "Rebel Rebel", "Diamond Dogs", "Sweet Thing" and "1984" captured Bowie at his most experimental and cinematic, while the album’s lavish production hinted at the soul direction he would soon explore with "Young Americans". Bowie not only wrote and produced much of the album himself, but also played lead guitar after Mick Ronson’s departure, pushing his creativity into even bolder territory.

The album artwork instantly became legendary and controversial. Created by Belgian artist Guy Peellaert, the sleeve portrayed Bowie as a haunting half-man, half-dog hybrid creature sprawled across the cover in surreal fashion. Early copies caused outrage because the original painting clearly depicted the creature’s genitalia, which were quickly airbrushed out on most releases, making uncensored versions highly sought after collector’s items today.

The accompanying Diamond Dogs tour would become one of the most spectacular live productions rock music had ever seen, featuring massive stage sets, elaborate choreography and Bowie transforming concerts into full theatrical experiences.

On this day in music history 23rd May 1992,

On this day in music history, just six months after the death of Freddie Mercury a statement from his attorneys revealed one of rock music’s most touching and surprising stories.

The legendary frontman of Queen had left the majority of his £10 million estate (around $17 million at the time) to his lifelong friend and confidante, Mary Austin.

Freddie once famously described Mary as “my common-law wife,” adding:

“All my lovers asked me why they couldn’t replace Mary, but it’s simply impossible.”

The pair met in London in the early 1970s before Queen became global superstars. Although their romantic relationship ended, their bond remained unbreakable throughout Freddie’s life. Mary stood beside him during his rise to fame, through the wild excess of the rock world, and during his final battle with AIDS. Freddie even entrusted her with the location of his ashes after his death a secret she has never publicly revealed.

Behind the glamour, outrageous stage costumes and stadium anthems like "Bohemian Rhapsody", "We Will Rock You" and "Somebody To Love" was a fiercely loyal and deeply emotional man whose closest relationship endured until the very end.

🎸 Want to step into the world of Freddie, Queen and the legends of rock history? Join my Rock ’n’ Roll Tour through Soho and London’s iconic music locations — the clubs, studios, pubs and hidden streets where musical history was made.

On this day in musical history 21st May 1983

On this day in music history David Bowie conquered America as *Let’s Dance* hit No.1 on the US singles chart, becoming the song that finally made Bowie a chart-topping superstar on both sides of the Atlantic.

Already one of the most influential artists in music history, Bowie reinvented himself once again with the sleek, infectious sound of "Let’s Dance". Produced by Nile Rodgers of Chic, the track fused rock, funk and dance music into a global anthem that dominated radio, clubs and MTV throughout the 1980s.

The single also featured blistering guitar work from Texas blues prodigy Stevie Ray Vaughan, whose electrifying style added a raw edge to the polished production. Bowie had discovered Vaughan at the Montreux Jazz Festival and immediately invited him to join the recording sessions a decision that helped create one of the defining songs of the decade.

The groundbreaking music video, directed by acclaimed filmmaker David Mallet, was shot in Australia, including scenes inside a pub in Carinda, New South Wales. Far more than a standard pop promo, the video carried powerful social commentary, following an Aboriginal couple confronting racism, exploitation and the impact of Western cultural imperialism, while Bowie and his band perform almost like detached observers to the unfolding story.

By 1983, Bowie had transformed from cult glam rock icon into a worldwide mainstream phenomenon. "Let’s Dance" opened the door to massive stadium tours, global fame and a whole new generation of fans without Bowie ever losing his artistic edge.

On this day in musical history 19th May 1978

On this day in musical history British rock band Dire Straits released their debut single “Sultans of Swing”* a song that would go on to define an era and launch one of the most distinctive sounds in rock music.

Originally recorded as a £125 low-budget demo in the summer of 1977, the track began attracting attention after being played on London radio by influential DJ Charlie Gillett. Its laid-back groove, razor-sharp guitar work and storytelling lyrics immediately stood out from the punk explosion dominating Britain at the time.

Fronted by the effortlessly cool Mark Knopfler, the band soon secured a record deal and re-recorded the song for their self-titled debut album. “Sultans of Swing” became a worldwide hit reaching the Top 10 in the UK and Australia and climbing into the Top 5 in the US, Canada and South Africa.

More than four decades later, Knopfler’s iconic guitar solo still ranks as one of the greatest in rock history 🎸🔥

At the height of their powers, Zeppelin delivered a thunderous set packed with classics including "Rock And Roll", "Kashmir", "The Song Remains The Same", "No Quarter"' "Dazed And Confused", "Going To California", "Black Dog*"and the anthem that defined a generation "Stairway To Heaven".

The shows were epic in every sense. Giant stage production, laser effects, marathon performances and a band completely dominating the world stage. On this Musical day in history 15 May 1967

On this day in history, while London was swinging at full volume in the Summer of Love, Paul McCartney first met American photographer Linda Eastman at a Georgie Fame concert inside the legendary Bag O'Nails nightclub in London’s Soho.

At the time, The Beatles were redefining music, fashion and culture, while Soho pulsed with late-night clubs, musicians, models and artists chasing the next big thing. Linda had travelled from New York photographing the exploding rock scene, and fate placed her in the same room as Paul McCartney.

Their connection became instant and enduring. Less than two years later, on 12 March 1969, Paul and Linda married, beginning one of the most iconic partnerships in rock history. Linda would go on to become a talented photographer, musician and key part of Paul’s post-Beatles journey with Wings.

The Bag O’Nails became part of rock ’n’ roll folklore another hidden Soho venue where music history was made.

Want to walk the streets where these legendary moments happened? Join our Rock & Roll Tour through Soho and discover the clubs, bars and backstreets where Bowie, The Beatles, Hendrix, The Rolling Stones and countless others lived the London music revolution. 🎸
