So much to do. Why not join us for an Autumn Break.
π Autumn is one of the best times to explore Devon β and hardly anyone knows it π
The crowds are gone, the beaches are quiet, and the countryside is blazing with autumn colour.
Here are some things to do:
π Wander Clovelly without the crowds
Clovellyβs steep cobbled street drops straight down to the harbour, lined with whitewashed cottages that glow in low autumn light. In summer itβs often packed, but in autumn you can walk to the sea without weaving through people. Pause at the Red Lion for a drink by the water, then follow the South West Coast Path towards Bucks Mills, where the clifftop path is edged with turning leaves and overlooks a restless grey sea.
π¦ Watch the red deer rut on Exmoor National Park
October is rutting season, when red deer stags clash antlers and roar across the valleys. Itβs one of the most dramatic seasonal wildlife events in the UK. Go early or late in the day for your best chance of seeing them, or join a guided safari such as Red Stag Safari to get closer without disturbing them.
π Ride the South Devon Railway
A steam train chugs between Buckfastleigh and Totnes along the River Dart, passing wooded hillsides that blaze amber and gold by late October. Break the journey at Staverton, a tiny rural halt with a path to an old stone bridge, then continue to Totnes for a warm drink on the historic high street before heading back through the autumn dusk.
