DID YOU KNOW? Every curling stone used at the Winter Olympics comes from one small, uninhabited island off the west coast of Scotland.

Ailsa Craig, a volcanic plug rising from the Firth of Clyde, contains some of the most perfectly balanced granite on Earth, making it ideal for the sport.

The island actually provides two different types of granite:

• Green granite forms the main body of the stone, built for strength and durability.
• Rare blue hone granite is used for the running surface, allowing the stone to glide smoothly across the ice.

This isn’t just a modern tradition either, granite from Ailsa Craig has been used for every Olympic and World Championship curling stone since 1924.

So when the world watches the Olympic curling finals…
