Let's find out a little more about him!

Age?: 10

What are you racing this year Angus?:
Mainly racing downhill in Wales and England but I’m hoping to race my first DoonThaBrae enduro whilst on holiday in the highlands at Summer :)

How old were you when you first started coming to Dirt School?:
I was 8. My first kids academy was with Innes and Fi. I absolutely loved it. I couldn’t believe there were other kids who loved being on a bike as much as me. I just wanted to do it all again the next week.
I remember Andy laughing at me being silly whilst standing on my saddle 🤣
I always think about what he said “talent only takes you so far, I believe in hard work”

Other than bikes, what do you do in your spare time?:
I play piano and guitar! I love snowboarding! I swim competitively for my local swimming club.
I am also a member of Birmingham BMX club and train with them most weeks. Fun fact: I can do a double back flip on the trampoline!

Introducing the third rider on our Dirt School Academy team, Harry Roxburgh!
Let's find out a little more about this 13yr old ripper.

What events are you racing this year?: I'm racing the Scottish downhill series and some enduros. It's my first year of racing and I can't wait to get started!

How old were you when you first started coming to Dirt School?: 8 years

What's your earliest memory from Kids Academy?: All the Dirt School coaches are so much fun. My early memory is of a coach doing a Spongebob impression when we were having a snack 🙂. I never wanted the Dirt School courses to end (I still don't!)

What's a fun fact about you?: I'm bike-obsessed and can even ride a unicycle - once I rode all the way around Arthurs Seat in Edinburgh (5km) on a unicycle!

If you're aged 13-17, are comfortable riding on technical enduro trails and want to improve your riding on the most challenging tracks, this one's for you.

BASE Academy takes place over four consecutive mornings on the Innerleithen and Golfie trails. Fine tune your technique and explore line options with our expert coaches and improve race times by learning how to build a race strategy and understanding how riding patiently can save you seconds.

The next rider in our Dirt School Academy Team is Evie Wilke!
Now at 13, Evie has been coming to Dirt School for 6 years and has the riding skills to prove it.

When did you start coming to Dirt School?
I was 7 when I did my first Dirt School session. In those days it was Janey taking the course with Tom before Fi joined the team. I knew they were cool people when Janey told me she liked motocross!

What are you racing this year?
Some SDA rounds, mini downhills and some enduros.

You obviously love riding bikes, but what other sports or activities do you do?
I love my Border Collie, Dhu and can't wait until she can join me on the trails! If I'm not riding my bike, I often go surfing.

It's a pleasure to have Evie on the team, keep an eye out for her on the trails and at the races this year!

There’s more to the BASE course than just riding bikes. This week it was the turn of the level 8 students to go through all the logistics of putting on a bike event, from organising land permissions, to event entries, logistics, course layout and prizes. Luke, Henry and Sam did a stellar job and hosted a brilliant Dual Slalom on the old Glentress racecourse. 🏆

Practice was a blast, with plenty of runs for all, and qualifying and racing were properly tight with just fractions separating the eventual winners.

Over the next few weeks we'll be telling you a little more about our awesome young Dirt School Academy Team riders. First up, it's Barney Oakes, the oldest member of our team at age 15.

When did you start coming to Dirt School?
I was 11, it was just after lockdown and Dirt School gave me direction and a strong desire to race.

What are you racing this year?
Focusing on Enduro but will do the occasional DH race too.

We know you love riding bikes, but what other sports do you do?
I love sport, including; hockey, tennis, surfing and skiing all of which I'm really passionate about but would drop any to go for a ride at the Golfie!

Keep an eye out for Barney at the races this season! 😁🙌

Last week was the first team day out for our newly formed Dirt School & Tweed Valley Bikes youth team, giving our riders a chance to meet each other, session on the trails, hang out and pick up some coaching tips from Andy and Fi. 🥳💪

We had a great day together, are already looking forward to the next one, and we’re super excited to see what the year ahead brings for this great young crew. 🤩

We're super proud to announce Dirt School & Tweed Valley Bikes have formed a new youth team to support the next generation of up and coming gravity racers. Our four selected riders have all been coming to Dirt School year in, year out, since they were much smaller than they are now, and represent everything that Dirt School Academy strives for. They're process driven, happily take feedback on board, approach challenges with a positive attitude and work hard to succeed with their goals.

Welcome Barney Oakes, Evie Wilkie, Harry Roxburgh and Angus Newton to the team.
